Nottingham Forest defender Brendan Moloney has returned from his loan spell at city rivals Notts County.

The right-back made the short trip to Meadow Lane in the summer and the 4-1 win at Burton Albion on 28th December was his last appearance for the club.

The Magpies were keen to keep Moloney but, being unable to afford to buy the 20-year-old outright, Forest are keen to aid the player's development by loaning him to a club in a higher division than League Two.

Moloney made 19 league and cup appearances for County scoring his only goal for the club on his debut in the 5-0 rout of Bradford on the opening day of the season.

Good times, by all accounts he impressed at County (he impressed me in the preseason friendly), so it would be good to sort out a better challenge for him.

If he did as well as reported at Notts there should be no shortage of League one clubs interested in him which will only be beneficial to him.

Got massive potential, didn't look out of place when he had a run of games last season in a poor side. Like the fact we're looking to give him better challenges to build up his experience ready for our first team.

Joe Heath, Arron Davies and Matt Thornhill also.

Just had a look at Heath only played 3 times which is particularly dissapointing. Dunno about Davies and Thornhill? Doesn't sound like they did too well either.

Davies was getting a few games earlier in the season - I know because I saw him take a corner which Brighton scored from

I think he fell out of favour though, Thornhill by all accounts was a disappointment and was apparently not happy with the move anyway, so perhaps it's understandable.

I'm still harbouring lingering hopes that Davies will recapture his Yeovil magic and get a run in the Forest side. Thornhill on the other hand I just don't think has the natural ability to play for a team as good as us.

I liked the look of Thornhill when he came into the side, but must admit that given the rapidity of development going on at the City Ground under the Billy revolution I do wonder whether he'll get near the first team again.

Same for Davies too, methinks. I think he just had 'one of those games' against us in the playoffs. But well, Billy's the best person to judge I suppose :)

Thornhill has more natural ability to score goals than any of our regular midfielders... he's scored more than all of them too, and mostly from sub appearances. A couple last season, like away at Palace and Norwich, were quite important ones as well.

He might do a job if he came into the team in the Raddy/McGugan position, or even Cohen's advanced midfield position.

He did most certainly have a knack for those late runs into the box :)

Haven't Thornhill and Davies been told they can leave?

I liked the look of Heath and Thornhill. But perhaps that was because they had some determination and were playing in a losing side with no confidance so looked as good as other first teamers last year. Agreed though I dont think theyd be anywhere near the first team, especially Heath. Both should go back out on loan. My mates dad works with Thornhills dad and your right, he was gutted about going down to Brighton so never really going to work.

Maloney I think has good potnetial and should go out on loan to a minium of League 1 team. Wouldnt get in adhead of Gunter and I think Davies would play Perch or Chambers at RB before so he'd be 3rd or 4th choice. Davies is an enigma really. How can he play that well against us and then never do anything since. He should get one more chance and if he doesnt take it then take him on Trent Bridge and shoot him
;D, Billys got to be ruthless now

Notts County can't afford our 3rd/4th choice right back rofl after all that bragging when ****o finanace took over

Davies and Thornhill will definitely be off this month if anyone wants to buy them. If no sale, they'll go off on loan again and Thornhill, as much as I liked him last season, needs to sort his head out.

He ruined the move to Brighton for himself because he never allowed himself to settle.

Like it says in that story, Moloney will be off on loan to a League One club 'til the end of the season and I'd imagine we'll offer him a new contract then to make sure he is developing as expected.

I seem to recall once such person coming on here and telling us not to loan them Gunter as he wouldn't get near their first team.

ARRON Davies and Matt Thornhill have been told they can leave Nottingham Forest in January.

The winger – signed from Yeovil as part of a £1m package deal with Chris Cohen – and youngster Thornhill have just returned from a loan spell with League One Brighton.

Davies has largely struggled to establish himself at the City Ground, as frequent injury problems combined with a struggle for form.

Thornhill had been regarded as a bright prospect at the club and featured regularly in the first team squad under Colin Calderwood.

But, after new Seagulls manager Gus Poyet decided to cancel both players' loan moves to the south coast, Reds boss Billy Davies says a January move away from Forest might be in everyone's best interests.

"I have spoken to several players and the last thing I want to do is stop them progressing their careers," said Davies when asked about the duo.

"Sometimes you find yourself at a football club at the wrong time.

"Sometimes you have to take two steps backwards to take three forwards.

"We have good young players here who need to move on; who need to go and have a fresh start.

"There are players here who need to move on to kick-start their careers because I can't see them getting in the side here in the next couple of months.

"We do not want to waste their time.

"Over the next two or three weeks, we will be making some tough decisions to benefit them and the club."

It was Davies' superb solo performance for Yeovil in the play-off semi-final against Forest at the City Ground that persuaded the club to swoop for the winger.

But Davies has made just 12 league starts and 20 sub appearances for Forest since his arrival in July 2007, scoring one goal.

Thornhill has made 18 league starts and 20 sub appearances for the Reds, netting five goals.

Another loan spell would do Moloney a world of good. He has shown a lot of potential & surley in the future, under Billy's guidance he can become a very important squad player

It's been mentioned on here by a few people who know him or his family that he didn't want to go in the first place.

He failed to settle.

If I remember rightly, Jonathan is based in Brighton, so may have more chance of knowing than some of us.

I also seem to remember he is studying sports journalism, so true to the profession - he could quite easily have taken gossip from a forum & printed it as fact

Forest will find it difficult to choose who to loan him to next with the enquiries.
