Moloney and Heath out on loan - a mistake?

Sorry if this has been posted in a thread elsewhere, but even without the injuries to Perch and Wilson and Chambers' suspension, surely we should've kept these 2 at the club until new defenders have been secured?

From what I saw of both of them last season, they didn't look THAT out of their depth. OK, I would be hesitant to chuck them in as first choice players, but as back-up's I think they are both sufficient.

I've heard we can't recall either/both of them, which to me says that Billy has made his judgement that they are not ready for 1st team football at all. That's his call which obviously we have to respect, but I think it's not turned out to be an overly clever one.

The only thing I can think of apart from the fact he doesn't rate them, is that he was absolutely certain we would get a couple of defenders in. I would argue that this is rather naive though.

Would be good if we had them for tommorrow but in the long term its better they are playing every week then just playing for us for the odd game here and there.

Is easy to be wise after the event, did not see too many of us commenting at the time. BD has been making the point for a long time. He obviously feels that targets were lost. I mean Jones to Scunthorps c'mon

jones wasnt a target anyway

he was in january but not in the summer.

Agree that in hindsight we would have been better keeping them at the CG for a bit longer, but who could have predicted the injuries, suspensions and lack of defensive signings?

That said, I would still have kept Moloney at the CG this season anyway. He coped fine last season and would have done so again this season. He's had enough time on loan in the lower leagues now and I want to see him tested at a higher level.

This is kinda my point though, if you take any injuries and suspensions out of the equation, as far as I'm concerned the only recognised players we have for right and left back are:

Gunter, Lynch and Bennett.

- The latter of those is completely untested at Championship level and may take the best part of the season to get properly match-fit after such a long lay off.

- Lynch has shown himself to be an adequate defender at best and calamatous at worst. I don't even think full-back is his best position.

- You could argue that Perch can play right-back, but again, is this his best position?

I just don't get why we would intentionally leave ourself so short in the full-back positions. I accept the point that it's better to have Moloney and Heath playing every week on loan than the odd game here and there for us, but surely it would've been better to wait until the end of the month to arrange these deals?

We NEED Centre Backs.

I guess we could fanny around shuffle people into different positions, but in theory, we have Lynch and Gunter for Full back positions (Gunter on international duty for bradford fair enough, but someone out of position for that one game isnt the end of the world)..

Heath and Maloney shouldn't have been released so soon, but are also both full-backs.

But with no chambers or wilson.. who its debateable if they should be starting anyway.. WE ONLY HAVE 1 PREFERED CENTER BACK.

I see Lynch as more of a CB than a LB. For me, he's not mobile enough to be a full back - like Gunter, Bennett and Moloney are.

I don't think CB is as critical... most of our problems seem to come from out wide, rather than through the middle... especially down the left! If we address the LB situation, I think we'd be a lot better for it.

Expected someone to bring this up and behold , here it is.

It's not a mistake to send Moloney & Heath on loan , they gained valuable experience and exposure to first team footie that they were never going to get at forest. It will also toughen them up in the lower leagues. However , i can only hope that Davies does monitor and track their progress as opposed to "out of sight , out of mind".

That's where you are wrong , CB is VERY critical. A very solid center back will clear and sweep up any crosses that comes in , a poor center back will let it pass and struggles to keep the ball out.

Take for example , which do you think chelski will struggle more without , terry or cole ?

Jordan Fairclough has been handed squad number 39, make of that what you will...

He's not good enough to wear No.3

Forget LB or centre back. We need a new defence full stop. Chris Gunter and Wes are all we have in reality so bring one for each position in at the back (that's 4 players).

I have been studying us compared to the rest of the squads in our league today and we are Pish Poor. I see no point in going half way there. I have mobile numbers of agents of lads available on free else relatively cheap in comparison. Fritz Bischoff who acted for Majewski in his transfer. He has a very small stable.. about 15 lads- German/Polish. One of them is Lukasz Szukala, established centre back in Germanies second tier. 25, about 500k. I think he'd do a job. If you do a search ignore him pulling the italian lads hair.

Loaning Moloney and Heath maximises the chance we will sign two quality/ competent/ adequate championship defenders in this window.

There is method in this madness.

Maybe, but it's the sort of brinksmanship that gives me heart failure!

i'm sure there is but it surely would have made sense to keep hold of them at least until the new defenders were brought in ? then at least if we did keep meeting brick walls as regards to getting our targets in then at least we would still have some cover within the squad with some experience of championship football. i'm all for them getting some loan experience but i do think the club was a bit hasty shipping them out .

To keep them would leave open the opportunity to make do with them.

This does not appear to be Billy's preferred option.

But if they seem to be -by many- better then why not bring them through?

Well it would be nice if we had these available, as I'm sure they would love to have the chance to show Billy what they can do.

I don't think it was a mistake as they are both gaining valuable experience and the intention I believe was to get better players in anyway.

Bit hard on Moloney because Gunter also has time on his side - I wonder if Moloney actually has a long term future here unless Gunter moves on quickly.

Things haven't worked out defense wise as Forest would have wanted. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. With hindsight I'd be a millionaire.
