Personally I think he should grow some bollox. I have staff who come to me and "chit chat about holidays and stuff" when you can see something is burning inside them (usually want time off). If you want the gaffer to let you know whats going on ask him, don't beat about the bush with talk of your new pantry.

Spot on! I've had this discussion a million times with people that are on "sick leave" because of injuries... A gaffer holds the responsibility to employ people who are good enough to do a job that you're paid damn well to do...
Stop whining, earn your money, enjoy your 15 minutes...
