McGoldrick

Am I the only one who has not been remotely impressed with him?

I have seen all the games he's played in and he does not look like that much of a threat up front, anonymous a lot of the time and plays far too deep.

His finishing doesn't look great either. Earnshaw is definitely the better striker and should always start over him IMO.

I think this is a ridiculous thing to say this early in the season plus the limited chances all the strikers have had so far. Personally I think he has looked very promising so far and is a very exciting prospect.

I like him.

Think he does alot of unseen wrok, like making runs that take defenders away, I do prefer Earnie though he is our best goalscorer

Earnie is a far superior finisher for sure. From what I can gather, McGoldrick seems to act as a link between midfield and the front man. Away from home becomes the 5th midfielder etc.Maybe with Garner banned he will fill that role now and Earnie will get his chance.

I think he's looked ok when I've seen him but I prefer Earnie, Blackstock as central strikers to him, and Tyson & Garner if asked to play wide.

So I guess, I'm not that impressed. Definite potential though.

I'd say I've been fairly impressed with him. He's a good runner and chases the ball well but in terms of his striking ability I still think he needs improvement. He had a really decent chance against Sheff Weds which he could have easily wrapped his left foot around and probably score from 6 yards out, instead he tried to use his right.

Saying that though, there are not many footballers these days that can use both feet!

I'm impressed, seeing his tracking back and defending when we've needed it has helped, along with his general play and movement up front. Give him time, we're only a few games in.

Wasn't too impressed vs Shef Wed but other than that I think he's quite strong on the ball.

Seems to shoot a bit weak though along the floor.

He has a future indeed, but i don't think he should be starting ahead of Earnie. Like what 'former forest captain John Mcgovern' said, he is good at linking the strikers to the midfeild, but i don't think he can play up front as part of a two. may be better playing behind them and joining the play.... maybe a good chance to try him there with raddy out for a bit.

He isn't an out and out striker so comparing him to the likes of Earnie is pointless.

I think he's looked promising so far, got himself on the scoresheet, intelligent on the ball, helps out defensively and works hard for the team.

Its not a pointless comparison when he's probably the one keeping him out of the side.

I can't say i've fallen either way on mcgoldrick yet, he's done a job and fitted in, doing exactly what i expected of him, but considering the attacking qualities of our team, i still struggle to see where a regular supply of goals is going to come from. I would love to see earnie given a few straight games in mcgoldricks place, get him some goalscoring confidence and watch the goals roll in!

We've got six strikers, all of whom offer something a bit different. I personally think six is too many, but do admit that we have options for almost any situation and all types of opposition. McGoldrick is one of those options and I quite like what I've seen, without being blown away so far.

What we DON'T want to do is create some kind of Camp / Smith situation where Billy is criticised whenever Earnie is left out. I he's such a deadly goal threat as some claim then he'll score enough goals to play regularly. If he doesn't then others will get more games than him. I'm happy with any combination of our strikers.

Davies has used McGoldrick pretty much either on the right side of midfield or an extra man in the middle where he has been tracking back and tackling . Like Garner & Tyson , he hasn't really been used solely as a striker upfront.

So far , only Dex , Adebola & Earnie has played mainly as strikers when they are used. Dex obviously has done very well , his hold up play has been excellent and he has already scored a lot of goals this season. Adebola has proven to be effective when used for short periods and Earnie hopefully will start to pick up his form.

did you not watch the game last night then? he was one of our best players without doubt, he rarely gave the ball away and apart from a bit of showboating that failed to come off i can't remember him losing posession otherwise , he nearly always played the best option available as well , there is far more to being an attacking player than just shots on goal but having said that he was VERY unlucky when he beat a couple of players in the box and flashed a shot inches wide of the post from an acute angle , his first touch is outstanding and i'd say he's probably the most skilful of all our attacking players , although he probably wouldn't hit 20 goals if playing every week i think he'd still score a fair few but create many goals for other players , excellent signing .

also did anyone else notice he saved us from losing an almost certain goal at the owls when he made a fantastic blocking tackle in our six yard box ? the commentator called it as lynch but it was definitely number 17 mcgoldrick .

On last night's commentary the general consensus was that his best role would be playing behind a front two of Earnie and Blackstock/Adebola.

i'd agree , he looked very comfortable when he dropped back a bit , his ball retention is excellent and he has a turn of pace that gives him a good goal threat , personally i see him as a better option in right midfield than garner or filling majewski's position if he's unavailable or being rested .

Agreed.

I'm really not sure about Garner as right-midfield. It's not a total disaster but I'm going to need convincing that he's a better option than McCleary, Anderson or McGoldrick.

What everyones saying is true, but i don't see where that leaves our goals coming from...i have been impressed with garner out right, his work rate is fantasytic and he has put in some more than capable balls, the same can be said of tyson but clearly in a different way. McGoldrick has been playing very deep, and i have been impressed with what he has done, especially as i was skeptical of his signing. But the fact remains with all these players playing deep we don't have a natural outlet who will start banging in the goals. Dex and Dele are both good strikers but aren't prolific. I really think earnie is the missing link and would love to see him given a run. He needs a run of games, as all six yard box strikers do, so to get success out of him thats what must happen, otherwise we can stick as we are, playing well, with performances full of effort, but struggling to finish the chances we are definitely capable of making.

Dex has the ability to score more than his share , all his goals has been close range inside the box. When he is the one holding up and usually battling alone against opposing big defenders , i don't think you can ask for more really.

I watched the highlights again. I think you are right , it was McGoldrick that block Varney's shot and then Blackstock , helping out in defence , did well to clear it for a corner. Lynch was nowhere to be found.

Absolutely right - it was McGoldrick, great tracking back to help out the defence. He could become more useful as an attacking mdfielder or winger (where he played with some success for Southampton) but he has a role and gives us an alternative, something (again) we were sadly lacking last season.

As the team starts to gel I expect we will see more of McGoldrick when we play away than when we are at home. Billy seems to prefer him playing as the link between Midfield & Attack in away games to make us a much harder unit to break down.

At home, I expect Billy to use 2 traditional strikers (2 from Earnie, Dex or Dele) with McGoldrick being either a sub or playing as a wide midfielder.

As has been noted already, McGoldrick has excellent ball control, an eye for a good pass/through ball and is difficult to knock off the ball. (A bit like Jack Lester, but without the diving!)

As a quality young player with plenty of potential to develop even further - I think McGoldrick was an excellent piece of business for Forest - even at the Million or so we paid for him.

McGoldrick is ok, hes certainly getting better and better having been a tad over weight on the opening day. I def agree that he should be in the team ALONG with Earnie rather than INSTEAD of him! When Earnie is not the pitch I feel we always have a better chance of scoring even if we're playing crap
