McGoldrick vs. Garner

Looks like we're getting McGoldrick, for about the same as we paid for Garner, who you think will be

I just noticed that our offer is the same as we paid last summer for Garner, so a comparison of the two is on the cards ...

Garner is the better striker.

McGoldrick is about at his level hopping around the lower Championship, whereas Garner is destined for much bigger things.

I still don't understand why we are going for him. We have Tys Garner and Earnshaw. Is McGoldrick any better or too much different to them?

I understand Adebola even though im not a fan, but I don't get this one.

Hope Garner has a good pre season and shines this season, i could see him easy getting us 10 goals maybe more a season.

Agreed. I can even see him being chosen over Tys sometime soon, should we bring in Blackstick and McGoldstick.

I would sat Garner is the better player. But I shall wait to be proved wrong

I think McGoldrick is a good Championship player who will probably only ever be good enough for this league but will be a good solid signing.

Garner, on the other hand, is currently a good Championship player who I think will play in the Premiership soon enough.

Garner's better, but McGoldrick isn't a bad signing by any means.

I reallt rate Garner and i think he is one of the players in our squad that could step up to Premiership level one day...

I've seen McGoldrick more than most of us and in my eyes he's nowhere near as good as Garner.

McGoldrick may turn into an average Championship player. Garner could have the makings of a Premiership talent - I hope he can acheive that with Forest.

McGoldrick can show some nice touches but seems inconsistant. Towards the end of the season he was playing (quite effectively) in the hole behind the striker(s) and this may be what we want him for?

The Southampton fans in the office don't rate him as worth a £1m!

Now watch him suddenly turn into a 30 goal a season striker! (We wish :D)

Surprised to see EM is still only 21, so this could be a good signing.

14 goals playing in a relegated side is decent for a young player, who was probably their main striker, having competition, not as much pressure and playing in a better side could do him wonders over the next couple of seasons

just hope we have as much competition for places in other departments, like Defence!

come on you reds!

No offence but how many have actually seen McGoldrick week in week out?Only then can we truely make a true comparison.

Though I do take Erik's view very seriously, in a better team though who knows.

Well, speaking as someone who hasn't seen McGoldrick play 'week-in, week-out'...

The first thing that jumps out about him is that he's 6ft 1 - making him the big striker that Davies favours in a 4-4-2, meaning he's likely to play alongside one of Garner, Earnshaw or Tyson. I'd guess Billy still wants Blackstock as well, as having two players competing for the 'big striker' position, is better than having to revert to plan B when EMG is injured/suspended etc...

He's definitely not the 'big striker' target man, regardless of height. He's barely even an out and out striker.

Wow, Garner actually has a lot of support with the fans. He's had some promising moments, but he seems to have convinced people he has real potential. I suppose he has shown some real quality touches, and his attitude seems great. Those two things alone are something to build a first rate player on.

He's terrible.

And thats coming from someone who saw all the home games this season.

He has had his moments of talent but for someone who played almost every game of the season.. his scoring record was pretty crap.

L1 football means I still have a club.

So tbh, I don't really give a shit about watching L1 football.

McGoldrick can play as a left winger as well, I think ???

Which could prove useful if *New Left Winger* get injured :)

I love the fact that we still call him Blackstick!

The thing is, someone who watches him week in and week out won't be seeing Garner in action.

S4L is yet another Saints fan who doesn't rate McGoldrick - and seeing as how he's been pretty friendly towards us that's something we should take on board. I hope BD sees and gets something from him that none of us can see.

Is it a BD signing or a 'Transfer Comittee' signing? The fact that we've been after him before suggests to me it may be the latter flexing their muscle.

I found that McGoldrick played a lot better when we placed him in an attacking midfield role. He still wasn't great, but like I said, he had his moments.

Our fans keep bringing up that he scored a decent amount for a team that finished 2nd from bottom, but considering the amount of times he played.. His record wasn't that great.
