I get the fitness issue but Lowe is quality in my opinion. In terms of football ability he is a no brainer.

Agree, would take him in a heartbeat on a permanent.

Not got the athelticism of Spence (who has?) but the rest of his game is solid.

I think I agree, mainly because I think he will cost a pretty penny in the summer and I suspect we can (and will need to) do better with the money.

For me it depends of wages and transfer fee if he's going to cost multiple millions then he's probably not worth it, if he's at a reasonable cost then go for it.

With Laryea, Panzo and Lowe we should have a decent starting point for next season, then just need to find Djeds replacement (if required).

I think solid describes him very well, but hes a hundred miles from Spence in terms of quality. I'd view him in the same bracket, quality wise as Yuri Ribiero and I don't remember too much fuss when he was allowed to go on a free.
As has been said a few times, for me, with Spence its about how much dosh he costs. If its reasonable great, but if we are coughing up 3M in a fee, with several million in signing on fees and wages I'd look very carefully at other options first.

I think Lowe is a bit underrated due to how good Spence is on the opposite side. Lowe is a good Championship left back.

It's his fitness that worries me more than his ability. I'll trust the club's judgement on this one, they've gotten most things right since Murphy came through the door after all.

Of course he's not at the level of Spence, but as a result Spence is on the radar of Arsenal, Tottenham and Bayern Munich and we have no chance to sign him. Lowe is a decent performer at this level so would be a solid signing IF Sheffield aren't looking for to much.

There might be other options out there but there's something to be said for someone who knows the club and would settle straight in. It's something Billy did well in his time here... turning loans into permanent deals for players already settled and happy.

I take the opposite view-I think Lowe has been over-rated due to Spence and the global view that our flying wingbacks are our principle weapon. 95% of the threat is down the right-Lowe is solid enough but creates <10% of the chances Djed does.
Not saying hes not a solid Championship player, by the way, nor that I don't trust the recruitment guys who are getting things right as you say.

If he wasn't a biscuit I'd say yeah alright on a free as he's steady. Too injury prone though and we have to remember we'll be expecting more from our left next season without Spence carrying us at times.

3m for Spence? Are you in 1993?

We've struggled for a decent left back for years and now we have one in Lowe he's not good enough. The expectation level seems to have risen with our league position.

I agree. Also, good left-backs are hard to find. Buchanan has played for England u21s and every time I watch him he looks terrible.

I suppose it depends on how good the club think this Longelo kid at West Ham is and can be, and whether we can get him.

You're right. I wasn't fussed when Ribeiro went as I thought we could replace him with a much better player. Which is exactly what we did.

Spence is a physical freak and a much better ball carrier but I think the rest of Lowe's game stacks up pretty well.

I don't think Lowe is better than Ribeiro. He would have thrived in our current system with the way he bombed forward and his athleticism. They way he plays is quite similar to Spence. I wish we still had him.

Me too. He was always better as a wing-back than as a purely defensive option, and he had the engine to get up and down the pitch.

The only problem I have with Lowe is that sometimes he's defensively suspect - not in the same way as Spence, whose main fault is getting caught too far forwards - but since coming back from his previous injury, I've notice Lowe taking up poor positions - wrong side of his man, letting his man go when there's no-one else to cover etc... and he's been lucky on a few occasions that it hasn't resulted in goals being scored against us.
But overall he's been decent and much better than some of the dross we have trotted out at the position.

I know it's all what ifs but I think Cooper would have loved him. He's high energy and very athletic. Again similar to Spence where he would have been far better deployed as a wing back as you say. He would have given us better balance and we would have been a genuine threat down both flanks.

I think Lowe > Ribeiro easily.

He has been very good all season bar QPR away and that last game where he was injured.

Lowe's defensive & in particular tackling display away at Blackburn was immense. He seems to balance when to get forward and when not to well but he has a great inside pass to him that he often finds our player to feet very well. He probably can get away from a marker & deal with contact better than Ribeiro too. Not taking anything away from Ribeiro though. He was good for us.

But I do agree that injuries are a concern. I seem to remember him getting lots of niggling injuries at Derby.

Thank God. Thought it was just me.

My abiding memory of Ribeiro was a player who struggled with any kind of contact, his positioning was poor, but he did have some success going forward.

Lowe every day for me. if he could stay fit, Id snap him up next season.

Absolutely. I think Lowe is a substantial upgrade on Ribeiro, who was decent enough himself.

I said it further up, Lowe is absolutely crushing it statistically this season. Miles ahead of any other full-back in the league, including Spence.

Given how we are now supposedly moving towards a more analysis-based recruitment model, I imagine the club are very happy with the signing, bar the concerns over fitness.

I think the lack of any kind of left-back for so many years has kind of clouded lots of fans’ opinions on players in the position.

People were distraught when Pinillos was let go, despite him having a nice left foot, not great pace and defensively pretty weak (especially at stopping crosses).

Yuri was better than Pinillos, but despite attacking with gusto and giving us an outlet on the left, his attacking productivity was really poor. Rarely beat a man, and his crossing was terrible. Defensively he was ok, with his pace getting him out of positional problems a few times. Obviously had a great attitude and seemed a good lad too.

But objectively speaking, Lowe (when he’s fit) is far better than the pair of them, defensively and going forward. I was pleasantly surprised how good actually, as I was expecting a quick player who was weak defensively. I actually thought before his first injury, he was slightly ahead of Spence.

He’s had a couple of right stinkers, but on the whole he’s been very good. Not many left-backs in this country that we could conceivably buy/loan that I’d take ahead of him, so unless they have a foreign lad lined up who is mustard, I’d be happy with Lowe next year.

All the hype over Josh Doig seems to have gone quiet this year and Buchanan looks terrible every time I see him. I’m happy with Lowe.
