There’s a bit of football snobbery involved. If a player with EA’s stats over the past 2 years was playing for a cartel club his transfer fee wouldn’t be questioned.

Nobody watches him every week apart from us, they don’t see him running past players ever week on match of the day so assume he’s not that great.

There also seems to be something in which team buys and sells. So if Brighton or West Ham are selling a player for ridiculous money it is fine because BHA are well run and West Ham are a media loved ‘big’ London club. If the team buying is Liverpool or Man Utd. Even Arsenal, Chelsea or Spurs it’s ok. City seem to be judged differently to others. And little teams like Forest with their mad owner. Forest can’t have players worth silly money or Marinakis is mental and stubborn.

I rate him, would have liked to have seen us go for him as an Anderson replacement (ahead of the likes of Bergvall and Jones) but I think I would have topped out at £50m.

People seem to suggest that the market has changed in recent years, but he went for £50m last year, and hasn't done enough in the trailing 12 months to warrant a £35m increase on that figure.

Like with all transfers now, long term Premier League sides aren't short of cash and they can name their price. Fair play to West Ham, but like you say Maxi it is an awful lot for a guy who is on the Nigel Quashie path of getting teams relegated .

Despite my questioning about the price, I'm quietly impressed by Spurs' transfer activity this summer. Van Hecke, Robertson, Fernandes and Senesi are really good signings that cover lots of the things that have been wrong with Spurs over the last couple of years. I was hoping we'd go in for three of those four players (Van Hecke being the one not on my list) so can't help but feel a little disappointed that they've all ended up at Spurs.

The irony is that probably even less people will watch him for City. Most people I know find them boring now and aren't interested in watching them.

I think the availability of really good midfielders has dropped. We appear to be going through a bit of a phase where clubs seemingly want to reduce the risk of players having to adapt to the PL or England.

I think spurs seem keen to get things done. Whether it is relief at staying up or they need to show the fans they mean business and they are running things differently to Levy. They have spent big on de zerbi and are backing him. I think they probably have just stumped up a decent fee for that reason.

He is still at least a couple of years younger than Ando. Spurs have stumped up to get it done so paid a little bit more. I think it will be good business in the long run.

I hate how limited he is for England. He is so good going forward but seems to have to limit half of his ability.

If England are to go further they need to release him

Baleba really isn't that good either. He just looks like every other competent PL CM. I think he's one that got overrated very quickly because of the whole myth around Brighton developing young talent. MU are trying not to pay the huge money this summer and they're gonna end up with a bunch of players that are good but not good enough.

Yeah this is it and it’s absolutely hilarious. They’ll likely overpay for Baleba anyway who hasn’t kicked on like predicted. He's still young obviously but it’s quite funny watching United who in the past would have just gone out and got Anderson, now they have missed out on Ando, Fernandes and Tonali and are going after a lesser young prospect.

It’s the equivalent of them in the past under bidding for Rio Ferdinand, then Jamie Carragher, then getting pipped to the signing of Alan Stubbs and in the end settling for Craig Armstrong.
