Nottingham Forest chief executive Mark Arthur insists squad building for the new season is only half done.

The Reds have already captured Dele Adebola, Paul Anderson, Lee Camp and David McGoldrick.

Arthur told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I won't be pleased until the job is done and we're only half-way through what we're trying to achieve.

"I don't think you can ever be pleased with anything in football though, except for winning the game."

More signings are expected at the City Ground in the next couple of weeks, with the Reds linked with Doncaster's Matt Mills and and Preston's Paul McKenna.

Arthur added: "Progress so far has been OK. The players we've managed to bring to the football club are proper players and proper individuals as well.

"The excitement they've shown in coming to the football club - it's not just another football club in their eyes.

"Something's happening down at Nottingham Forest in their eyes and also in the eyes of many other people associated with the club."

I don't think I will be getting too carried away with what Athur is saying. It isn't though he has a good record when making press statements.

He generally spouts his clap trap at season ticket renewal times, so I'll continue to take what he says with a pinch of salt.

Just to remind us all, I think this was one of his spoutings.........................

"To Colin (Calderwood) and myself the priority is to do whatever is necessary to further strengthen the squad... Our priority is promotion this year and next year. Then staying in the Premier League and qualifying for Europe." :D

It's clearly over ambitious but it's not exactly cause of any concern for me to hear the chief exec speaking in these terms. Not in the slightest.

Understatement of the year!

However, :), I honestly believe that the narrow escape last season sharpened the minds of the people in charge and that the appointment of a manager who is clearly not a 'yes' man has meant a significant shift in the way we've conducted our business this summer.

Yes, we are obviously still trying to screw down the best possible deal - which leads to long and protracted transfer sagas, but at least this year I can feel confident that we are 'walking the walk' rather than just 'talking the talk'

I think there are still more to come.

That's right because like I said - It is season ticket sale time.

Whoops; we've missed Jones already and when Barker signs for the sheep and Mills gets scooped up by a lower Prem. side then his hollow clap trap will be swept under the carpet again until next season.

To be fair, we did go up the season following that statement. Although the Europe stuff is obviously silly.

It doesn't concern you in the slightest that the man in charge is being over ambitious? That he's setting targets that are not (yet) realistic (which is what over ambition is).

It's fine for building up confidence but face it - That statement does give people the opportunity to drag it up when it doesn't happen.

It also puts unnecessary pressure on the staff and can lead to equally unrealistic expectations from the supporters.

I agree, a dour, realistic assessment would probably not look half as good and maybe even lead to cries of 'where is your ambition?', but Mark Arthur, like the boy who cried 'wolf!' has done this sort of 'Whoarr, we're going to do this' type of thing so often that it's hardly suprising when people regard his statements with a certain amount of scepticism.

My actual point within his quote was the piece where he stated:-

"Our priority is promotion this year and next year"

Yes, you are right about us getting the promotion during that year but let's be honest - what happened last year was nothing short of being disastrous, we only just scraped relegation again so where would that have left the ever deluded Arthur? - back in "Claptrap Land"

As I recall what he actually said was 'Our priority is promotion this year followed by promotion to the Premiership'. I'll check when I get home.

It was when he announced we were building a new stadium in Clifton. (How's that going by the way?).

Anyway, the Post have paraphrased it and it does actually look worse than the intention.

Although there was talk about 'Europe in 2011'........
 
The actual passage I used was a copy & paste from the NEP from June 20th 2007. and here it is again......

Jones and Barker are no better than what we have and Mills isn't worth £3M.

Barker is better than what we have in my honest opinion. He's an organiser and leader as much as anything, which is something we need badly at the back.

However, having said that, I don't consider him as a massive step forward for us.

Mills? I don't see us paying £3m for him. But then, only a few short weeks ago people were saying Camp was worth £1m! :)
