I think Lynch works well in a central back three on the left hand side, which isn't a system Billy's played too often. Agree though he's done okay when deployed as a centreback so it's good we have cover there - I'm not entirely convinced about him, but he's young and has time to learn more - and Billy clearly sees something in him.

The lad will be happy to have 2 roles he can play, he may still be LB after Shorey goes back to Villa.
As for the other LB we have, he may never fully recover from his injury.

At the end of the day, he only cost us £200k, so it isn't like he's a million-pound-flop.

He's decent cover to have and he is only 21, so he has plenty of time to develop!

Interesting that he mentions Chris Cohen as one of the two fit left-backs at the club now, along with Shorey. Perhaps he won't move back into the centre of midfield as most of us, me included, expected?

I think he will move back into midfield while we have Shorey at the club, but Billy clearly sees Cohen as a better LB than Lynch or Bennett.

I don't think that's fair on Jules. Billy hasn't seen him play and so won't have any opinion on him.

I think Lynch always has been a centre back, but has always been asked to do a job at left back for us. I think he played in the centre at Brighton, maybe someone with Brighton connections can confirm or deny that.

As for Bennett I think he will be given a chance but will have to accept being a cover player now at Forest. Obviously with our interest elsewhere, perhaps that's what Billy has in mind but it's all down to Bennett, does he want to fight for his future here or take easy money elsewhere

Lynch is indeed a centre back.

Had only played a handful of games at left back for Brighton before we signed him.

i agree we should keep bennet

hes really good at wearing that forest tracksuit everywhere he goes

Yup, as you said, he's a centre-half. I've argued for a while that he only got shoved out at left-back because, as a left-footed defender, he was the player most likely to be able to cope from the available options. I seem to recall the same thing used to happen to Steve Chettle, back in the day.

Lynch is still a good solid signing despite the fact he doesn't play. He's a reserve, and a good one at that who you wouldn't worry about throwing on. We havn't had a squad including players like him for many's the year.

Just look at last season, an injury or two and bam, you've got Adam Newbold up front. There's supposed to be a buffer between the first 11 and having to throw young, out of their depth academy players onto the pitch. They're called the reserves. Paul Smith is one and Joel Lynch is one and they're both pretty good!

I quite like Joel Lynch, for a player so young he has a lot about him and has filled in an awkward position ( :hey: ) without complaining. When Chambers was moved from full back to his natural position he looked a very competent defender, Lynch will quite probably do the same if not better.
