[LTLF] Matchday Memories: Forest v Celtic, 1983

...The most astonishing thing is there’s about 20 Celtic fans climbing the floodlight pylon, not out of malice, but to get a better view. The astonishing part is they’re wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts. Absolute loonies!...

Great post.

I have to concur that since I took up my first season ticket in August 1980, this was THE biggest occasion on Trentside I have EVER witnessed.

I'm sure there are people on here that recall the Everton FA Cup Semi in '67, and as a footballing spectacle it probably 'top trumps' the Celtic game. However, has there ever been an occasion quite like that mad winter's invasion of '83 before or since?

Fantastic post.

As a relatively young Forest fan of just 20 years of age I do feel sad that I couldn't share some truly special moments in this clubs history that many on here have.

Unfortunately games such as the Sheffield United and Yeovil play-off defeats have brought out the strongest emotions in me, and alas not the thrill of promotion from League 1 or escaping the clutches of relegation. Only promotion to the Premiership can heal that pain.

my abiding memory of that night was the bridgford end terracing "steaming" and sodden with celtic fans weeing where they stood in rolled up programmes!!!.....there was a tenntedvillage under the trent bridge arches set up 2 days before the game!.......and the cold, so cold!!!!

I posted this about the match in another thread but it belongs in this one really:

Can anybody remember when we played Celtic at home in the UEFA Cup in the 80's - evening match so cold that the game was almost called off because of a frozen pitch

For those of you on here too young to be there that was an unbelievable night

Celtic fans literally took over Nottingham that day. They set up base in the Market Square during the day and then marched en masse down to the ground. I seem to remember they brought about 13,000 fans to the game - they had half the Bridgford End (when it was terrace) and the entire lower tier of the Brian Clough Stand

Despite the fact it was freezing cold loads of them had no tops on and at least 3 or 4 climbed to the very top of the floodlight in their section of the Bridgford End

Getting tickets for this game was hard even for Forest fans - I can remember I was in the Trent End that night

One of the highlights of the night for me and something I will never forget is watching this old guy at least 60 years old with a Forest shirt and scarf actually climb to the top of one of the metal beams that held the Trent End roof up - it took him about 30 minutes but slowly but surely he got there and was perched about 40 feet above us all - everybody was applauding him and cheering him and thinking what an absolute nutcase and how can somebody that age do something that stupid

And then all of a sudden he threw down his Forest scarf took off his shirt and underneath had a Celtic shirt on - he had a huge smile on his face and everybody was applauding him and cheering him even louder for the cheek of it !

You have to give the Celtic fans credit they are truly awesome fans and this old guy summed up the lengths they would go to to support their team

And then we got a free kick bang on the edge of the box in the very last minute of the game. (One of those that is so close that it is almost impossible to get the ball over the wall and down enough in time) but then that genius that was Metgod stepped up and to this day in my mind hit the most mercurial free kick into the top corner (it seems like yesterday) and we went berserk in the Trent End - it just does not get better than that

The old boy in front of my in the Main Stand (where I was for that game) collapsed in a heap when that goal went in. It went pretty mental in the main Stand too - those were the days when very few people could score off a free-kick with such regualrity.

Johnny Metgod remains my favourite Forest player of all time, for the two greatest free-kicks I've ever had the privilege of seeing (the ManU one was number 2)...

Best. Free. Kick. EVER.

Fantastic. My old gaffer always talks about this game. Apparantly a few of the rowdy Celtic hordes robbed a fruit machine from the Aviary and proceeded to throw it off Trent Bridge to the tow path below to receive it's bounty.

The weird thing is though I actually quite liked the story, rather than bring disgusted. Makes no sense I know, but there's something kind of magic and appealing about the crazy days of old, people climbing up pylons etc.

Would be bloody great to play European football again, eh. I think it would suit us rather well.

If you were going to Liverpool it was probably a double-bonus for him as he could pop in to see his family too! ;)

My overriding memory was of the build up. I used to work in the old Boots offices on Station St and took an extended lunch break that day to see what was happening in the City Centre. As early as 12:30pm celtic fans had flooded every pub and groups had congregated on major street corners singing mainly what appeared to be pro-IRA songs !!! The only time I have seen Nottingham City Centre completely awash with away fans.
