didn't they change federations because the Australasian one was to easy?

To be fair it has "asia" in it's name

Seemed like they changed because they were sick of losing WC play offs to South Americans under the old qualifying system. Asia was an easier way in.

Officially, it was probably what you said too. Or something to do with trade relations.

As it was the system changed shortly after and NZ made they WC by beating Bahrain.

How can Australia and NZ be playing under different Confederations? Did they go to war with each other?

Francis is right - the Aussies moved because they were fed up of trouncing teams like American Samoa 31-0, but then losing to Uruguay, Chile, Honduras or Paraguay by the odd goal in three in the playoffs.

The Asian confederation gives them a better shot (Asian federation teams get more automatic places to the World Cup).

New Zealand of course also benefit as the former best team in Oceana has buggered off, leaving the road a little clearer for the Kiwis.
