My Parents bought me the Marks and Spencers 'Soccer' book for Christmas in about 1988 (when I would have been 8ish.) I remember it had a picture of Ruud Gullit playing for AC milan on the front.

It had stories and the background of most of the major clubs in the UK and the world and I seem to recall reading it cover to cover on a particularly boring family holiday. Having previously sort of followed Liverpool ( :x ) as they were the biggest club around at the time, and having no famous local teams nor parents who particularly followed a team with any passion, I decided I needed someone to support. Plus I wanted to be different as pretty much everyone supported Liverpool at school.

Mr Clough was obviously on the telly quite a lot at the time and I always found him quite entertaining, and of course everyone knew of Stuart Pearce and his thunderous freekicks.

Luckily, the book had quite a large section on Nottingham Forest, which I read a few times before announcing to my family that I was now a Forest fan.

They thought I was joking but I stuck with it and I guess once you've made your decision you don't change it!
