Did anyone see lee hughes after his goal...i from about 3/4 forest fans try getting to him on the pitch..think 1 or 2 did get on the pitch before being held back.

I dont even think the ref booked him.

Would anyone have thought twice about his celebration if he wasn't Lee Hughes?

Once known as Nick.Doyle.nffc on 'ere.
Yeah I saw the men trying to get to him, but to be fair all game Lee Hughes was posing a threat. And he still looks good, so in League two he will do well.

So let me get this straight...

Lee Hughes was convicted of a serious crime, was punished with a Prison Sentence that he served, no doubt a seriously unpleasant experience for him.

This led to him also missing the most advantageous part of a short career, money and opportunities, but like it or lump it, he had to accept this. On his release he then has the chance to either return to his chosen job, in a reduced capacity, or join the job market where his previous work experience and jail term would place him at a huge disadvantage.

He returns to football in the knowledge that each time he appears before yet another set of fans, he is going to be the subject of some serious abuse, which again he is proving to be strong enough to take this on the chin................

BUT horror of horrors Lee Hughes scores against the side who's fans have been subjecting him to abuse, celebrates and this is somehow objectionable to the same fans ??????? Pot kettle and Black spring to mind.

Pot and kettle would spring to mind if someone had driven their car on to the pitch, mown the bugger down and then gone into hiding for a week.

Indeedy.

I had a few choice things to say regarding him during the game in the name of banter, so don't begrudge him celebrating infront of me at all.

So because he earns his living playing football, that somehow makes the crime worse....Leslie Grantham ? who played a leading character in one of the soaps served time for Manslaughter, I believe it was a Taxi Driver in Germany. Should he be subjected to abuse everytime he goes on stage, just because of his past.

If memory serves, Leslie Grantham lost said job due in no small part to him abusing himself. ::)

He killed a father of four, and left another man in a wheelchair, because of drink driving. How can you possibly defend him, or defend him from being abused. You mention dissadvantages in the job market and missing part of his career, how about the bloke who died? the bloke whos been left in a wheelchair? the four kids who've been left without a dad? All because some t**t decided to drive when he was drunk! He'd also already been banned for drink driving when he was 18, so it obviously wasn't just a one off mistake. He shouldnt still be playing football, I hope he gets all the abuse he deserves.

No, not at all. You couldn't make his crime worse - what a ludicrous thing to say.

Leslie Grantham ? Well I wouldn't let him in the back of my cab.

Yeah, Leslie Grantham might be a bad comparison :)

I don't think anybody denies that what Lee Hughes did was abhorrent, including probably himself.

Personally I don't have an issue with the abuse he gets at football - that's what happens, and he would have known that when he made the decision to return to the game.

I do think that was a brave decision though, and given that he served the sentence that was handed to him for his misdeeds, I wouldn't go so far as to deny him a career.

Would those of you who do feel as strongly about a less high-profile career - say, an electrician? plumber? data analyst? Or is it just because he's a footballer that people object?

Because there are lots of people who have committed crimes that lost people their life who continue to have a life after serving their punishment...

Sedgred is making the not unreasonable point that the same people who spend the entire game abusing someone who has served his sentence (the merits of that can be debated but in this context are irrelevent) should not be suprised when Hughes celebrates his goal against their team by trying to wind them up.

Personally I thing Lee Hughes is a despicable character but Sedgred does have a point.

I am not defending him, he was guilty and served his time. What I am defending is the right to, when he has served his time, then released on licence, why punish the man twice by not allowing him to earn a living. In this case a high profile job of a footballer.

I am not defending him being abused either, I suppose really I was stunned by the hypocrisy shown by the Forest fans, or a.n. Other fans when Hughes next takes to the field. Mock and abuse him by all means, but don't cry over spilt milk If/when he scores against your side and celebrates. After all he is only doing his job.

I used the Leslie Grantham comparison as I believe they were similar cases ( May well be wrong ) but both work in the public eye.

Aye, it was his subsequent w**king-on-a-webcam that probably sticks in the mind for us lol

But yes, it is a valid comparison if you ignore that!

We completely egged him on, don't blame him for doing what he did, regardless of why we did it (his past)

My only issue was him smiling about it all the f***ing time when we booed him.
