Can anyone confirm or deny that KWS's version of "Please Don't Go" was for Des Walker? I can't find anything about it, just seems to be a rumour that is always around

It was a running joke

That Des Walker Rumour... When Please Don't Go topped the charts in the early 1990s it was rumoured the song refers to Des Walker departing Nottingham Forest. Chris says that people were always asking them who the song was written about and it was just the office joke that it was written about Des. He says it was just a rumour that got into the public domain.

Their song Please Don't Go was already written before Des finally left for Sampdoria. This was the year we were playing Man Utd in the Rumblelows Cup, if we'd have one Des would have stayed because we would have qualified for Europe the next season; something which Des was passionately interested in playing in.

Behind the scenes Des has told the board that he would stay if we won the final.

As it happened we lost 1-0 and Des went to Samp, I beleive the fee was something like £1.5m which was incredibly small for a player of his stature, but with time running out on his contract...

KWS were trying hard to launch their career and the idea was launched to link the song to Des leaving - the song had nothing to do with him.

Interestingly, the story goes that Des was earning about £30,000 a week which was coming from the personal pockets of the owner of Sampdoria. The board at Sampdoria did not sanction the purchase and this was the only was to get him to join.

I remember at that final when McClairs goal went in quite early on that there was no way we would win. I do remember Des was brilliant in the final, it really seemed he wanted to stay.

It was arranged for Delroy Joseph the lead singer to meet Des as the City Ground gates to tell him Please Don't Go, it was on Central News and was so embarassing. Des didn't know what to do.

Having met Des on a number of occasions through friends he is a top top bloke; interested in other people, funny and quite down to earth. Except when he was blasting around Nottingham in a red Ferrari F50 or his 911 cab.

What a player, glory glory years. The only cavaet was when Roy Keane played in central defence during his last season, BC said he was the best defender he had ever seen.

The only song that springs to my mind about Des is 'Simply the best'. Remember it being played after he'd scored his first ever goal against Luton Town at home - very late on I seem to remember!
