Didn't Scholes retire from England well before his time though?

Yes.

Because he was fed up of being shunted to the left wing to accommodate Gerrard and Lampard.

Thing is I'm of the opinion that you don't retire from playing for your country. If the manager picks you to play in goal as a rush goalie come striker then you do it.

Psycho himself I think said something similar.

Except modern players don't share your views Blonde-they want to play for their country but mainly on their terms. And of course Psycho was very different having come into the game late he had a perspective none of the others had.

Psycho was a complete one-off.

The man was still advertising for electrical jobs in football programs when he was a full-time footballer.

'Modest' doesn't even begin to cover it.

Gerrard was absolutely world class and carried that Liverpool team. Not sure how this is even questioned, he had everything. Yes he was physical but he backed that up with his technical ability and knowledge of the game.

That Gerrard/Lampard debate was an absolute farce. It should have been Gerrard and Scholes occupying the central midfield.

Agree with the majority here.

Gerrard and Scholes were by far the best midfielders of the last 20 years.

Their technical ability and will to win were second to none.

When you've got plaudits for them coming from all over Europe, you know they were exceptional.

The problem is, Lampard always had an eye for goal that was better than both which confused poor Sven.

From what I remember though Lampard was always given much more of a free role and his goal scoring record was marginally better. I think if Gerrard was given that same role he’d have scored more.

I remember it the same. I think Gerrard was more of a sitting midfielder and Lampard was given licence to roam.

Scholes was on the left.

Gerrard still scored loads of goals which is testament to him.

Hargreaves was the best defensive midfielder England had in those days once everyone got past the fact he was German/Canadian. England's player of the tournament in WC 2006.

England's problem back then wasn't quality it was getting them to play well together. We persisted with that Gerrard/Lampard combo in a flat 442 for what felt like a decade, and not once did we dominate a single game let alone a competition.

If Super Coops managed that side and we played a more fluid and dynamic 352 system who knows, maybe we could have accommodated all three of those midfielders in their right positions and got bodies around them to bring the best out of them and the whole team.

Wasted opportunity in my opinion that generation.

Yeah imagine if Euro 2004 we'd have had:

GK James

CB Terry
CB Campbell
CB King (Ferdinand was still banned)

RWB Beckham

CM Hargreaves
CM Gerrard

LWB A. Cole

AMC Scholes

CF Owen
CF Rooney

That is a far more balanced team. Then we have Lampard off the bench to change things if we needed a goal. Pity James/Robinson were the goalkeeping options, but other than that, that team is quality.

I hope he starts today. Will be a huge boost if he does! He's been brilliant for us and we're a better side when he's playing IMO.

Hoping he starts to put them on the back foot. We don't want Huddersfield to settle into their usual rhythm.

Push and harass them in a smart fashion, and let's start positively without fear!

Poor old Keinan never really got going, but played his part in keeping them honest. I'll bet he'll feel it tomorrow.

It will be nice waking up tomorrow morning (or afternoon) knowing every single player in this squad we could sign if we want them.

No worries about FFP. Ahh, football bliss.

I think some of our fans are overrating him tbf. He's given us exacttly what the team needed in a number of matches but I think we should have a maximum price in mind and not go beyond it. I think we could find alternatives. Still love him.

I think you are probably right.
Theres a reason hes not made it stick at Villa in the top flight and that because hes fit and sharp only 25% of the time and if hes not both of those he doesn't cut it at the top. I don't see him barreling through premier league defences the way hes skittled average championship ones even when fit and firing.
Hes a gamble and perhaps one that worth taking but hes not worth spending huge bucks on...
