Leeds put £2million price tag on Cup hero Beckford
Published 23:00 04/01/10 By Mirror Football

Leeds have put a £2million price tag on FA Cup hero Jermaine Beckford.

The striker netted the winner as Leeds recorded a famous victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

But the 26-year-old is out of contract in the summer and Leeds are struggling to hold on to him.

Newcastle had a £1.25m bid rejected last week and since then Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough have made enquiries.

That prompted Newcastle to ask Leeds boss Simon Grayson to name their price and the Magpies were told £2m would be enough to secure his services.

Grayson said: “He’s a big commodity. We’re not looking to sell but money talks.

“He can sign a new deal or stay until the end of the season - worst-case scenario is an offer that’s too good.”

Beckford has already scored an astonishing 20 goals this season in 28 games for the League One leaders.

I honestly think he's too arrogant to consider us an upward move.

Indeed, I bet he thinks he's good enough for a move to a lower Premiership club.

I think his sort of character could upset the current balance in the dressing room. It is apparent we have a great team spirit so bringing in someone who may upset this could be detrimental to the team.

I think a premier league outfit might land him in the summer for free. If I was him I would be holding out for that, Forest might get promoted and land him but it will be a risk because its ok scoring gols at league 1 level but its a different ball game in the higher leagues.

There's a lot of bad blood between Leeds and Beckford.

Bates has said that Beckford stormed into a board meeting and demanded a transfer to the PL, whereas Beckford has said that, as top scorer, he asked for pay parity with the top earners and then found himself on the transfer list the next day.

Who do you believe?

£3m for a 3rd tier player out of contract in a few months? If it wasn't Newcastle I'd say it's rubish but with them you never know.

Nail, head and hit!

He lives very close to me and is looking to rent his apartment out at the moment and is going to be on the move this January but I would imagine Newcastle will eb his end destination unless a Fulham or a Stoke come in.

With regards to his attitude I would say questionable at best but would take whatever Bates has said with a pinch of salt, Leeds had the opportunity to get him signed up to a new contract!!

Billy is always talking about the right player, which is better than what we already got, and that the player won't disturb the "harmony in the dressing room" (Which is kind of disturbing!)

Beckford is nowhere near as good as Dex or Earnie, and everyone knows how arrogant he is. If beckford would've responded in the same manner if Billy took him off the pitch, as he did to Grayson, Billy would've knocked him out! :)

I seem to recall a third-rate striker scoring a memorable goal against a "big" club, and Forest paid over the odds for him a few years ago.

What great value Justin Fashanu was.......

lets be honest, Stan was a bit of a dip with the stunts he pulled (admittedly most were after his CG days) but could Beckford become a modern day Stan?

Its all 1+1=3

He's available and supposedly quality +, we're looking for quality and we've got cash in abundance (in my opinion) = this MUST mean we're interested

He will never come re his attitude the transfer panel at Forest looks into the players background and Arthur said yesterday that he doesn't want a bad apple to upset the rest.

Do we need another a striker?

Also I don't see him fitting in very well with us. Barry-Big-Bollocks he seems to be. Very good player though

Neither of them.

They're both c**ts.

They deserve each other.

They can both rot in Hell as far as I'm concerned - neither Leeds or Beckford should ever be assosiated with football.

No because the difference is Stan had real talent.
Was speaking with an old mate who's a Leeds ST holder today. He confirmed that Beckford is severley overrated, although he is glad that he is and is hoping that someone is willing to waste £1.5m on him. :D

I don't accept all these 'bad attitude' allegations as justified reasons not to consider a player.

It's down to the Manager to 'control' each player with the right amount of respect without tears and tantrums. Maybe Jemaine just hasn't had the right kind of manager and squad to play for and with.

He's not worth £2.0m though. :nowink:

Why do we need him really? Hes not even that good, he only scores goals in league one 'cause of his pace thats how he gets the chances, he has f*** all else to his game. He cant pass, awful first touch, look at his goal against manshite united his first touch was disgracefull.

Plus hes a mardy dirty **** with enough attitude for the whole of Nottingham, even if we needed a striker desperately i wouldnt consider him.

Championship leaders Newcastle United will continue to pursue Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford despite his price tag being doubled by the League One side. Newcastle have been linked to Beckford for a while and a move was thought to have been agreed but The Guardian are now claiming that Leeds have changed their asking price to £3 million following Beckford’s winning goal in the FA Cup against Manchester United at the weekend. This however has reportedly not put Newcastle off and they’re eager to tie up a deal for the 27-year-old.

In all honestly if the reports in the press are to be believed that the asking price or reported price for Beckford is to be in the region of £3million pounds, then i seriously hope that Forest are not interested in bringing him here, not at that price anyway.

In my opinion there are far more interesting and better players out there that we surely need to look at first, i know that Beckford is a proven goal scorer, albeit in a lower league, but after his display at Man Utd the management at Leeds must be rubbing their hands with glee, the more the name Beckford is seen in the press the more i can see Bates doing a Ryan at Doncaster did in regards to Mills, so therefore i would like to see Forest tie up the deal for Majewski and to spend money on players with a proven back ground and experience that we need!

Let Newcastle waste what little transfer money they have on him. Signing him has a chance of putting their promotion in doubt as he is (from what I hear) disruptive in the dressing room. We have 5 better strikers than him at this level.
