Its automatic then.

Talking promotion is normally the death knell of a season. I wish they wouldn't. If we'd just beaten West Brom, Newcastle and Middlesborough fair enough but Plymouth, Peterborough and Scunthorpe aren't cause for over optimism.

Tyson bullish about promotion bid

Surely there's a spelling mistake in that headline?

Tyson bullshit about promotion bid

Ah! that's better!

I will accept nothing less than automatic promotion or this season is a massive failure.

Best get used to disappointment.

Not quite on the same tac, but our Dexter was also giving it large in the media recently:

"If people are coming to your home turf, you should be looking to take three points"

"We have to remember who we are – we are Nottingham Forest and people should be scared of coming here"

"We have a big crowd and a big stadium – everything about this club is massive."

Its amazing what context can do for you...

Chipperfield: Billy Davies doesn't look at the table, do you?
Tyson: Erm, no.
Chipperfield: well I wont tell you what position you are in but you're a point off the play-offs
Tyson: [shocked] Oh really?
Chipperfield: Can the lads push on and get into the play-offs?
Tyson: A lot of us would want to achieve a lot more than just reaching the play-offs.

Paraphrased for brevity. But who wouldn't want to acheive more?

It feels weird when you're not disappointed. After the Yeovil game, I was so prepared to be non-plussed about going to the playoffs I didn't know what to do when we actually did it. I just went to the pub and was very quiet. Mentally shattered by it all. The last thing I want is to prepare myself for a midtable finish and then have a heart attack when we win the league.

Best to aim high and be gutted, rather than be quiet in a pub, that's what I always say.

love the negativity in this thread.

I am full of confidence that we can go on and push for the play offs if we acheive it then great if we dont then at least its a step foward on last year, but ffs dont go shooting the idea down in flames at least our players are being possitive for once and have a goal to aim for.

and yes we are nottingham forest and we are a big club its a shame that some people dont share this view

TBH i'd much rather Tyson and the lads be confident and want to chase automatic promotion, than be willing to merely accept mid table obscurity.

Your all so negative! If they were saying survival is our main priority you'd be saying why aren't we aiming for higher , but if the players who have been putting in some immense performances in the last few games want to aim high, that's fine by me!

Our squad is more than capable of play-offs but i do think automatic is out of reach but we have strength in depth now which we didn't have so much of last season, e.g with our new look Mencken & Majewski center midfield partnership going well. Tyson has had a big improvement in his crossing this season and also when Anderson is up for it he poses a big threat.

Also now we've got Wilson back and Bennet soon to be back our defence has plenty of cover, Plus there's the man everybody seems to have forgotten about Perch to come back who cam more or less play anywhere on the pitch as hes such a versatile player . And our strikers are up there with the best in the league. And to top it all off team spirit looks good so see no reason why not be optimistic!!!!

Might as well go for it, are we on a par with any of these sides from the CCC's history?

Is that akin to "better to have loved and lost than to spend your whole life w**king"?

I'm not unduly negative just in recent seasons as soon as we start talking promotion it normally goes tits up. I have no problem aiming for promotion just don't talk about it!

According to some - if we are unlucky enough to be promoted, we will only be there a year, 'cos our organisation, management etc will not be able to plot ANY way of staying there. So - if we did go up, let's give up our place to some other team with less points than us but who are presumably more deserving in some way. eg the Sheep or Lester. That way, we won't be disappointed when everything hits the fan.

Or, if we're in a really good position just before the run-in, we should take our foot off the gas so we miss out and let some inferior club leapfrog us towards that £30+ million prize.

Or on the other hand, if we have enough points, we are there on merit and deserve to be there. Then, it's up to the professionals who run our club to keep us there.

I really don't understand the 'it's too early' school of thought. Any players who could just develop into Prem players (and we've got one or two), will not hang around for the 2 or 3 seasons some advocate we should wait before being promoted. Also, we owe no money - if any of the top three gets promoted, they all owe considerably more money than us. Only Newcastle have the crowd (income) to help them service their debt. West Brom and Middlesbrough have smaller crowds than us. Fact. So who would we think should survive in the Prem better?

If we were able to pick and choose which season we get promoted then I would agree that another season (or even two) would put us on a stronger footing and more ready for the challenge.

But that isn'the real world and the reality is that you might only get one chance so you have to grab it. Back in 2002/03 I reckon many Forest fans thought our unsuccessful play off campaign was the start of something big. However, a few players left, new signings didn't make the grade, DJ got injured and before we knew it Harty was gone.

If we are anywhere near the business end in the spring then we should hope and pray that we get a bit of luck and get promoted.

I'd like to think the players are aiming for automatic promotion. Doesn't mean that's where we'll end up.

I remember having a rant about Calderwood's media pontifications in which he said "oh - second place will be OK", followed by "Play-offs will be fine" followed by "we hope to make the playoffs" or some such spineless crap.

Nice to hear someone aiming high for once.

If you don't aim for it, you won't get it.

Exactly right - its great to see a bit of confidence from the players; we've not seen anything like that from the lads for a few seasons now (I'm not evening considering the "we're serious about promotion" nonsense).

If Billy has instilled that level of confidence in the team, so much the better. Dexter Blackstock is right - we are Nottingham Forest, and we are big club.

Who knows where we'll finish this season (I certainly don't!) but its refreshing to hear genuine confidence from so many of the team!
