Having been a long time fan of Nick Marshall, our Academy Director,I found his contribution to the Forest Foundation members' evening at the City Ground a real boost.
Whilst everyone, not unnaturally,is agonising over who will be leaving or joining us over the summer,I've had some worries about whether we might be throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and forgetting the importance of still brnging through more young first team potential players via the Academy system.
When I heard Nick, who after 13 years with us,knows a thing or two about young talent coming through our ranks, say that we have the best group of young players at U16,U15 U14 and U 13 level that we have had, possibly even including the Jenas/Dawson /Reid group,my ears pricked up.When he went on to tell us that, whereas when in League 1 we could no longer attract players from far afield because they didn't fancy lower league football, but that now we have development staff in Greece etc,the crucal importance of us staying in the CCC last season became even more apparent.
When he also told us that we have the best young striker in the whole of Britain in one of our squads, which went to Greece and hammered an Arsenal Development group which was drawn from the best talent available in the whole of that country en route to winning an U16 tournament with a team containing U15 and U14 players I became even more pleased.
The icing on the cake was hearing that we are now successfully recruiting in both Derby and Leicester (our winning goal in the Final in Greece was scored by a Derby lad)and are shortly announcing the appointment of a new member of staff whose appointment will sicken our local 'friends'
The final piece of good news was when I asked him about the disappearance of our reserve set up after the problems of the badly organised Tote Sport League. He told us BD is setting in motion a series of friendly games v top class opposition like Arsenal,Villa etc.Not only will there be some 20 of these during the season but they won't be behind closed doors as in the past but almost certainly at the City Ground ,available to the public. Not competitive League matches, but an excellent way of giving the over 18's a chance to play v top class opposition in preparation for making the next step.
All in all, a thoroughly uplifting contribution from a guy who is a credit to our club and shows that our new manager is behind the 'Forest ethic' contrary to what some of us had begun to fear.
