BILLY Davies today offered a fresh warning over the need for Nottingham Forest to add new signings in January, cautioning: "We do not want to find ourselves short at the end of the season."
The Reds lifted themselves into third place in the table, level on points with second-placed West Brom, following a 3-0 win over Davies' former club Preston.
The win also extended Forest's unbeaten run to 14 games – their best run of form in more than 30 years, since the days of Brian Clough.
Davies said he was very proud of his side's recent performance levels – but warned that the squad still needs bolstering between now and the end of the campaign.
"It is important that we do not leave ourselves open in April," said Davies. "That is most important.
"It is vital that we do not go into the last five or six games of the season in a strong position – and then find ourselves falling short through a lack of cover.
"We are in a fortunate position at the minute with injuries, but it would only take four or five more injuries to ruin our strong position.
"We are not trying to mend something that isn't broken. That is not the aim. What we have to do is cast our eyes forward to March and April and the situation we might find ourselves in then.
"Having a big squad and new players might suddenly seem very, very important when we get to that stage."
Forest will continue their efforts to land Spurs defender Gareth Bale in January, while they are also likely to make a bid to land on-loan Nicky Shorey permanently.
Davies is also keen to sign a midfielder and a central defender. The Reds currently seem to have strength in depth, but that is because Julian Bennett and Guy Moussi are their only injury problems.
And the boss wants Forest to be in a strong position in May.
"We can be very proud of the situation. We are proud of the run and the way we are going about it. We are proud of our spirit and everything else that goes with it," said Davies.
"But I want the accolades to be coming in at the end of the season, not at the middle of it. That is what we have to keep reminding ourselves.
"We have got to enjoy good moments in football, because you know there might be difficult spells to come.
"The consistency in this side has been there for everyone to see. That is the pleasing factor for me. We have gone about our business very well."
im sure we went like 25 games unbeaten under frank clark
