Ibrahim Sangaré of CÔTE D'IVOIRE

I like Sangare, seems to get a lot of abuse on here but everyone has their opinions.

I noticed the way we were always giving the ball to him when the others couldn’t find a forward pass, therefore he was at least having a go at finding one where others were failing, which meant some didn’t work as West Ham had basically shut down all of the final third.

The penalty, wonder why Aina was behind him at that moment, think the problem was not Sangare as he was on his own, possibly could have done something different but thats how it goes, would have been a great job if he had stopped the attack, he was the only one close which we need to remember.

We have no idea if Luiz is any better, or even where Nuno will play him, time will tell us on that one. Maybe they will play along side each other and both be excellent.

MGW was the worst offender of giving the ball away and trying to perform Cruyff turns when it would have been far easier playing a simple ball, Tuchell will not like that

Sangare spent a lot of time covering full backs and being in the right place at the right time. His passing wasn’t as reliable on Sunday but no one’s was. Credit due to West Ham for cutting off the passing lanes and channels.

Unfortunately our front three didn't provide better movement. For that reason alone I’d have subbed them all by the time sixty minutes was up.

I'm not writing him off, but he's got a huge hurdle (his size) to overcome in a very physical league. There aren't many (I literally cannot think of a single one) 5'7 players who are proven, consistent Premier League players.
Jesus Navas, who was a touch smaller I think, was a pretty tidy player for Manchester City!

Think that's spot on. He definitely wasn't at his best, but his willingness to accept the ball (as is his role) from the defence in tight spaces, then a lack of options meant West Ham just needed to double up on him, and they were winning turnovers high up the pitch.
He absolutely struggles mentally and physically after 60/70 mins, which is a real concern after a long period of stability in his physical condition (and a pre-season). This (combined with other factors) led to a bad decision in our box, badly executed.
I admire Nuno's desire to stick with his favourites, but think it's mad that he had Luiz on the bench in that game, and didn't want to bring him on.

This is just it though.
There will be games where Sangare just isn't effective, because of his specific strengths and weaknesses.
Its not his fault. There aren't many people blasting him.
Nuno needs to identify when Sangare is in one of those games and get him off the pitch BEFORE he ends up losing concentration. You could see the other day that once we were under attack at the end he was already wasted.
Its a Nuno problem mostly, not a Sangare problem.

I think he’s been alright this season. As most DMs do, he does a job that is largely unappreciated.

His main shortcomings are his speed of execution / he’s playing out of position. Oh…and his recent attribute…giving away penalties.

He’s not going to replace Anderson and hopefully Luiz. As such, he’s ours until summer 26, as I can’t see anyone buying him during AFCON.

Might as well get behind him when he’s on the pitch.

Sauce salad?
Bit like his appearances on Forest Focus.
I was amazed that he'd become a manager at one point - think he had Long Eaton United for a spell (maybe still does)? Rather than running through brick walls for him his players would be walking slowly to the boozer.

McGugan was as lazy as they come. He thought he could get through every game and by virtue of that an entire career just by being a great manipulator of the ball. He couldn't be arsed on the pitch, he couldn't be arsed to keep his weight down off it, he'd cheat the weight ins and he had nothing about him as a personality. How some clubs kept him around as long as they did is a mystery. He wouldn't have lasted 6 weeks if it was my decision.

One thing on Ange's in-tray is to see whether his coaching team can find this player.

Nuno clearly found important % increases in performance from most of his squad but I haven't seen this in a garibaldi shirt, yet....
