Welcome Qwerty, a leading question.........could have been an awesome player, but for what ever reason, just seemed to lack the final application of workrate to lift him above the average player in his day.

It's been a while since he played. I don't get to Reserve games. How's he doing for them?

He was talented, for sure - and built up a decent relationship with Pearce just behind him too... but as others have noted, didn't put in the most running ever!

Scored some belters though! I remember him fondly.

I remember him for scoring 2 crackers at St James Park to knock Newcastle out of the FA Cup when they were flying high in the Premiership and indeed him scoring the goal which pretty much wrecked their chances of winning the Premiership the year before.

And those two freekicks he scored against Spurs in the rearranged cup game. I too remember him fondly even he did lose fitness and fall from grace badly at the end of his career here.

I know Ian quite well, he is a top bloke, and i think too that he was good enough to play for England. I also the two goals he scored against Newcastle - Quality. I think he was abit lazy but not much, and to call he a scouser when he was actually not, he was from the Wirral is very harsh. And to call him a dickhead is very much over the top. Now working for Pompey - what a carear!

He had some fairly tough competition for an England call up - and whether or not it was truly fair his reputation for being a bit idle (and he wasn't exactly skinny) perhaps didn't do him any favours on that score.

Having said all that, remember that goal he scored at Maine Road (I think it was the equaliser to make it 3-3). A complete fluke with his right foot, but the celebrations were immense.

I rememeber a few folks calling him lazy back when he was playing, but most seemed to appreciate what he offered - so I shouldn't worry about some of the less positive comments.

He was from Runcorn wasn't he?

Ian Woan, as far as I am concerned, was an absolute legend. The best left winger we've had in years. He didn't do a great deal of running, sure, but frequently he didn't need to. I remember a whole series of wonderful goals he scored for us, brilliant efforts which, had they been scored by Cantona would still be being shown today by the sycophantic faggots at Sky Sports.
He could also cross a ball brilliantly too, which in this day and age would make him an incredibly valuably commodity as no sod seems capable of doing it.

Another thing I love about Ian Woan is the fact that he played for the Syracuse Salty Dogs and I was fortunate enough to see him play an A-League match there. He also played for Columbus Crew, where I desperately wanted to see him play, but was unable to get across and see him.

I heard a rumour a long while ago that he was going to become manager at Hucknall Town, but that never came to pass, which was dissapointing as I would have been down Watnall Road every home game if the Woan-Master was in charge.

Ian should have played for England, there is no doubt about it, but Terry Venables seemed to think otherwise, which is a shame because Ian could have really lit that team up.

If he stays at Portsmouth I wish them every success, but I would really like to see Mr Woan go into management on his own one day, as he is a beast who deserves success purely for being Ian Woan.

The man is the inspiration behind my shirts always sporting the number 14. :)

He gave me a personal tour of the City Ground when I was 11. Will always be a legend in my mind.
