Even if we consider that he's not been here long enough for any Billy effect to bring him up a notch, it looks like we've found our realistic number three, and he's a grower. Fine for now and his best years ahead of him.

I reckon we need to get him paid for and permanent, if he'll come. So, how much? I thought it was a little more, but we paid 1.7 mill for Gunter, seeing as Ryan is a left back and therefore has rarity, plus he's coming from a bigger club, how about 2.5? Chelsea have got a decent left-back already, plus the other lad we were tracking from them in that position is making their bench, so Ryan should be available for a good return on their investment, so long as they don't have an injury crisis.

And while we're thinking about costs, can Forest afford to have another Shoreygate? Can we f***.

3 to 3.5, (games played, call ups, promotion add ons etc)time on contract, England U21, youth academy, chelsea etc etc..
 
Good points, richiered. We have to consider that Pearce, who already likes him, might favour him for his club status at ours, thus driving up his resale value in future.
 
He is never going to make it at Chelsea so I would think a bid of a million with various different add ons would be sufficent.
 
Wigan, Bolton, Sunderland, QPR? for 3 million and double the wages we will ever consider. He won't stay. He's got more potential than Gunter had when we had him on loan. We would need to be serious contenders for promotion to even have a sniff. This guys resale value could be 5 million + in a couple of years. And double that if he ever made the England squad which is a distinct possibility in the future.
 
He's employed by Chelsea therefore big things are expected but there is nothing in his game at the moment that suggests he's going to be outstanding, he could be a regular in the prem in a few years maybe even a top 10 side , who knows. At the moment his value will be largely inflated simply because of 'age+potential' and because he's Chelsea

So should we wait a couple of years and attempt to sign him on the cheap?

Unfortunately sometimes if you pay peanuts you get Monkeys, but you can't soar like an Eagle if you're working with Sparrows.

Won't even get a look-in for less than 3million, and thats before considering he's probably already earning more than our highest earners at Chelsea, well before hitting his prime.

Shorey was ambitious but just about realistic, Bertrand? He might stay till may, but unless we go up, that'l be the last time we see him in the Garibaldi.
 
Yes its all Pleat's fault I can see that - ND wants to spend his lucre on dozens of stellar signings but Pleat wont let him, He has Svengali like powers over our feeble minded Chairman.

The manager likes him, the fans like him, the player seems to be enjoying his time at Forest, we've got the money and Chelsea would probably sell him. Will we get him? Will we f***!

And the journey of a thousand miles begins with giving 'em enough rope, which saves nine....

Err I can't see Chelsea selling him yet. I reckon they'll give him another season to prove himself. He has all the qualities to be a very good LB, they're certainly isn't a better one in this division.

Getting a bit ahead of ourselves concerning this guy. Sure he looks good when we compare him to the stand-ins we have had to use before he came, but to talk big money if we sign him is premature. £5 million? On what can we base that? Chelsea don't need the money but will make a decision about all the time and money they will have to invest in him before he is ready. The fact is that these rich Sky (I mean Prem) clubs can just sign the ready-made article from some foreign club or other and often don't want the delay while blooding their own home-growns. Man C v Chelsea? ONE academy player! Terry. This isn't going to change in a hurry. If we really want him, maybe, just maybe £1million will be enough.
 
Probably the best we can hope for is to be able to extend his loan period until the end of the season, be that in January or (hopefully) before.

We can then - at the end of the season - see where we are, and if its viable for us to sign him. Much as he has made a difference to us, a player of that quality is going to cost us good money, and coming from Chelsea, his wages might be a problem.

However let's be positive; he's probably fourth-choice LB at Chelsea, so unless a lower-end Premier League team takes a punt on him, we've as much chance as any Championship team, *provided* we don't try and do the deal on the cheap (and this is Forest, after all).

We know we're desperately short of numbers, but if Bertrand was our only permanent signing in the next Window, I'd probably be happy with that!

£600,000 plus add ons for promotion etc. bringing it up to a million, should be more than acceptable.
 
2 million would be my guess due to the potential and current form of the player.Experience doesnt seem to come into fee's much anymore.Seems about the right price to me and wouldnt moan if we had to pay that much.
 
We were saying the same thing about gunter - won't get him as he has a future at spurs, wouldn't want to step down. Then look what happened, I think we could be in with a really good shot of getting him.
 
Personally I think everybody here other than Tutts is over-rating the value of this player. Yes he's a good LB, well at least for us compared to previous LB's, but dont forget that Bennett is back n getting match practice and I think it will all depend on how he is doing with his return on whether we'll try to have him for second half of the season.

and as for a price to buy him, i think it'll probably be around the 1mil, good player with good potential but when it comes to defenssive players one of the most valuable aspects is experience (and the higher the level the more he is worth) he had a spell with Reading last season, and Reading hardly had a good season as everyone thought they would. He has no experience at the top level and has never played first team at Chelsea, if they truely thought he could one day step up to replace Cole they would have given him the odd match already. So I reckon around the 1million mark with possibly a couple of clauses in there such as a Sell-on fee if we re-sell him later on.

Good point, and considering that Tottenham aren't exactly a big buying club compared to Chelsea, Gunter would have been much tougher player to get. Chelsea can just buy someone if they get injury...
 
I was talking about this yesterday with my son. We agreed that its more likely that we could just keep loaning him, like Wolves and Mancienne.
