Steve Stone!

I work at Gateshead College Academy for Sport where we have a excellent football academy (7 British and England Colleges titles on the trot!). This afternoon Steve Stone (born in Gateshead) walked into our training and asked to speak to the boss!!

Apparently he is looking to do his coaching badges and has tried the clubs but none are taking on! We now have signed him up for some sessions with our scholarship lads!!

"Guess who walked into my work today.......Steve Stone" really is a crap title for a thread. You invite people to guess something then tell them the answer in the same sentence!

A certain way of encouraging a fairly new forum member :(, I don't think this is it

Not bad for someone who broke his leg three times & also snapped his patellar tendon though. 8)

That's it. I think (bar the broken legs) he would of been a top player and regular for England

Didn't he run off with another blokes woman and then went back to live at their house?

He had terrible luck with injuries, undoubtedly but for which he'd have featured more for us and England.

Broken legs or not, he should have had more caps for England. MOTM on debut and not a bad second cap either. He did the simple things so well, had an eye for goal and never gave the ball away. Shame TV had his obsession with getting Anderton in every time he eventually recovered from injury.
Wrong club, wrong face
Instrumental in promotion under FC and following season.

Don't think the England cap thing was his fault. He starred in the friendlies building up to Euro 96, but Vegetables always had a hard on for Darren Anderton, so as soon as the sicknote got fit for the tournament, there was only one man for the right side.

I always though Woan was the unlucky one - no left sided players and yet while he was banging them in from down town for a couple of seasons, he didn't get the call. Not England standard, but there was no one better Engish-qualified for a time.

Woan was one of - if not the only true top English left mid at the time ! It still grates me that these two didn't get more caps. Either due to certain club favouritisms or injuries.

John Barnes was part of the reason. I loved Woany but there were better left midfielders around at the time. Only one or two mind.

Stevie was terribly unlucky that when he was banging on the door there was McManaman and Anderton ahead of him, then he got injured and by the time he got fit again David Beckham pretty much had the right-wing slot nailed down.

Top player for the Reds though, one of my all time favourites.

Not just one. McManaman got played over stone on occasion, too. Which was criminal. Steve was on far greater form than both of them at he time and never had a bad game in an England shirt. The man is a true legend. Much respect for him.
