Grant Holt

I'm Sure I'll get slated for this, being a (very) infrequent poster...

Grant Holt scored a hat trick for Norwich last night against our friends out west, Yeovil.

I must confess, I only saw him play on the right wing in L1 and he looked terrible (can't forget away at Leyton Orient, people screaming at him that the ball hadn't gone out for a throw in as he watched it sail past). Yet he had previously been our top scorer and seems to be doing well for other teams - did we miss a trick?

I will qualify why I think we may have missed out on having him:

Last season there was much criticism of the team that we missed a target man up front who would hold the ball up for other strikers. Holt seemed (from seeing a very limited number of games) the sort of lumbering forward who could do this, as well as stonking the ball into the net when given it on a plate.

This season, there is great praise for Adebola for bringing some of the same attributes to the team (I have never seen him play, so please don't bring me up on this - purely on hearsay).

Would we have been better off last season had we had a 'less elegant' striker in the squad? My suggestion is yes.

I would of been happy with any extra striker last season. Bringing Trevor Francis out of retirement would of done a job. I did always like Grolt until the 'shop window' comments, but I think L1 was his limit !

Okay, I'll go for a sensible answer if nobody else will.

I think Grant Holt is a decent striker at League One level, as he demonstrated fairly well with us when deployed there. I'm not sure he'd be much cop at Championship level and indeed, wouldn't pick him ahead any of our six strikers at present.

I liked Holt.

Think he did pretty well In L1, thats about it.

Fair play about L1 being his limit, and also about the shop window comments - I hate the idea that we would have people in the squad who didn't want to play for the team. I'm not fishing for controversy here, just really thought (based on watching a very limited set of games last season - Reading (H), Derby (H)*2, Watford (A), Crystal Palace (A) that we missed someone in that role.

Thanks, that's the sensible reply I wanted but without the answer - would he have helped last season? As previous, my answer is yes.

As to Neil Harris - I think I saw him play twice. Once May have been the first time we lost to Yeovil in L1 (I went to all the Yeovil games because a colleague of mine is a Yeovil fan) and the other was when he scored against us at Milwall. Don't really see him as the same type of player.

Last season? Maybe, given the injuries we had in the striking positions he could've perhaps done a job.

I'm sorry, he appears to be out at the moment. Can I help?

I liked Holt as a striker, as a winger he was poor unsurprising really.

Last season i think we needed him at time and i think he will become an average championship striker.

For the record i liked Harris i think he did his job very well and it showed once we left him out we started to lose.

He did a decent job in League One, as did Agogo, but I never liked him. Sometimes he looked lazy, sometimes he just fell over for no apparant reason, he possesed little to no skill or trickery. You could forgive a player for being limited in his ability, but after those shop window comments I'm glad he's gone and I don't wish him any good luck either.

the only reason we shouldve kept holt, was because last season we seemed to bounce from one injury crisis to another.
Hed have been useful then.

But he was probably only decent at league 1 level....at least hed have kept newbold out of the side...

Grolty would get to every ball if someone tied a kebab to it.

There is a rumour that Delia took him to one side and negotiated a food based bonus with him.

Expect him to score 40 by december.........

Yeah, agree. The first season for us he was excellent and fully deserved all the praise he got. Then he got sloppy and just started to fall over all the time. He looked like he didn't want the ball half the time, which then put Tyson under pressure to perform even more.

Wouldn't want him back. League 1 player at best

I felt that we should have kept him longer but once he came out with the "being in the shop window and going to a bigger club" comment , there was no way back for him , it turned the fans against him and he had the rumored bustup with CC and got shipped off to blackpool on loan in a jiffy , his days were pretty much numbered from then on and it was no surprise that he got sold off cheaply to shrewsbury. We should have bought another target man type striker to replace him but we did not. After Agogo & Holt left ,we did not have anyone upfront to hold up the ball and have a physical presence in attack. that was CC's downfall.

Holt always came across to me as the type of player who could get sent off at any minute. No pace, no real skill, poor choice of words in the media and I dont even think he was that good a target man either to be fair wouldnt get anywhere near the starting 11 in this side and I think was rightly sold. If he had been that good then a league 1 team would have come in for him last season but in reality he was only good enough for league 2. Im only guessing but would probably be a disruptive influence behind closed doors too, glad we got rid.

First Team Squad
Holt is a good old fashioned centre forward that will score goals when played in his best position. I'm not saying he would get into our team now with the strikers we have but its the type of player we needed last season.

Everyone seems to forget that Holt was our top goal scorer and player of the season for the season 06/07 even though he spent half of the games on the bench.

Its no surprise for me to see that he scored 28 goals last season and and already has 3 this season. He will be league ones top goalscorer.

First Team Squad
We played Sinclair and Newbold last season so Holt would have been better than them.

Not worth worrying about him now. He was decent in league 1. Not brilliant. He fell over too easily and was to small to be the big target man. Not even close to Adebola.

We have 6 strikers who are all better than him. Good luck to him with Norwich but we don't need him back at all. We have moved on to a level above players like Grant Holt.

A lot of people liked Holt as was proved in the 06/07 season. Play him right and he will get goals... in league 1.
