Gonzalo Montiel

Feel like this is agent talk we have Williams and Moreira plus Aina can play there too. Left Back is the Priority in Defence

Assuming this is legit I don't think Moiera is deemed ready to deputise, which isn't all that surprising at this point.

Can't see this one being true, nor would I want it to be. We can surely do better.

Replacement for Neco if he leaves?

Cheap, been here a season already so doesn't need to adapt. Re-assess Jan?

Only makes sense if Neco off.

If a deal can be done cheaply, why not? Knows the club, knows the standard, might sell a few shirts in Buenos Aeries?

I don't see it that way at all - he was our back up right back last season. Currently our back up right back is 18 with very limited senior experience at a lower level. Points to him coming as a back up RB imo.

We have Aina who can play RB (and is arguably a better RB anyway).

We're still in the hunt for a LB.

If this link is right, I suppose that the club see Aina as a LB?

Still think we want a first choice LB (Locko)? That would move Aina over to RB, I think he's ahead of Williams.

That would then leave Williams as backup RB and Toffolo as backup LB.

If we then shift Williams for c.£30m and bring in Montiel for £3m then that's not bad business, assuming Locko around £15m.

Although it has gone quiet on the LB front....

I think we want a first choice LB (Locko) and a backup RB, but you're right in that's another possibility.

I tend to think Aina is possibly a bit overrated on here though, so that's a factor in my thinking, along with never considering Moirera a prem starter at this point.

I also think Montiel is better than our current back up lb - as I'd said before I'd bring him in as cover on the right keeping Aina for the left and lose Toffs.

Maybe the club can’t get Aina to commit longer than a season so are looking for longer term signings?

Not for me, not impressed, not even on a free transfer. They must be better players available. Hopefully this rumour will be killed off and we will have somone else lined up

Never thought we'd see the day when we were at best lukewarm about the prospect of signing an Argentine World Cup winner in his prime years.

Tale of the tape:

14 appearances 8 starts 6 subs.

5 wins 3 draws 6 losses.

5 bookings, 2 assists, no goals.

The losses were 2 versus Man City, 1 versus Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Brentford.

Apart from the last one which was the second coming of betfred they were probably losses we would expect.

Not actually a bad record.....

For me though the off pitch stuff lingering means its not something we should even be entertaining anyway.

We saw what he could offer and it wasn't great

The off pitch stuff I'm not interested in - I'd rather it wasn't the case but expect the club to have done their due diligence initially and am happy to leave it to them.

On the pitch, while Montiel has proved rash at times, technically he's a good player and while not being the most dynamic, he uses the ball well, links nicely and can pick a pass - hes no mug while probably not being the dynamic type we would want starting.

I don't believe we will find better back up for the relatively nominal cost it will take to get him here, but I do expect lots of our fanbase to lose their shit because he's "not good enough for (second choice at) Nottingham Forest'.

no thank you, look at the chelsea match at the end of the season , he was covering the right, Mudryk just ran past him, he did not even bother to chase, just casually jog across and left it all to boly to chase. Utterly useless considering the stakes of that match. Defensive liability.

His problem is whilst he looks solid at times, much like Turner he always has that one daft 'let's gift the opposition a goal' moment in him

It makes me laugh when people talk about him scoring the penalty that won Argentina the World Cup, forgetting that it was his handball gifting France a penalty in the dying moments of extra time that took it to penalties in the first place!

I couldn't work out whether it's a rust, switch off, brainfart or communication thing with him - it's probably a combination given he does the same at international level and has history of the odd red card.
