Goal Scoring Midfielder

Billy stated earlier that we need a goal scoring midfielder. I think he is bang on. Personally I think promotion is down to 5 teams for 3 places.

Newcastle, WBA, Cardiff, Us and maybe Boro just because of the quality of their squad.

All of those apart from us have a player who can score from midfield.

Newcastle - Nolan - 9 goals
WBA - Brunt 6 goals
Cardiff - Whittingham - 12 goals
Boro - Johnson - 8 goals.

Our closest equivilent is Anderson with 3 goals.

I'm not knocking Anderson, he is a massive part of the team but if we filled the other wing position with a goalscoring winger rather than Garner or Cohen who aren't that great in that position we would be closer to the finished article.

Maybe Darren Ambrose is the answer?

Or gareth Bale at this level.
Raddy has the potential. He's had a few shots blocked or saved recently

I'd be happy with a couple more goalscoring strikers. Only Dex and Earnie have really looked like being that across the season so far. As McGoldrick gets the Davies treatment and games up front, he can only improve and Garner and Tys are yet to really get a run at the sharp end of the team. Or is Tys now due to start being a goalscoring midfielder?!??!?

McGoldrick is potentially the goalscoring midfielder

I remember Bale scored a few for Southampton but I think he was a free kick specialist. Not sure how he'd do as a winger. Jack Wilshere would do the job but not sure that's realistic. Maybe George Boyd from Peterboro, him on the left and move Anderson right.

If McGugan gets a run in the team he'd be the most obvious candidate.

I'm not sure it overly matters that much, our goals have been spread throughout the entire side which is infinitely preferable to the days where we had to rely on Commons for pretty much everything.

I wouldn't say Ambrose is a goalscoring midfielder he's just a midfielder who's scored a few recently. All the others you've put up can be relied on to chip in with a respectable amount of goals each season.

What's Jonjo Shelvey's record like? He always seems to be getting forward but can't remember too many goals being creditted to him.

A goalscoring midfielder is important to teams though. Look in the Premiership and a team without a goalscoring midfielder is a team most likely in the relegation zone. I think we could look a little closer to home and give one of our existing midfielders a chance to be a bit more adventurous, it wasn't too long ago Billy challenged the Moose to become a goal scoring midfielder, McGoldrick can play that role, Majewski has quality and McGugans done well off the bench so if he can transform that into a starting performance when he gets his chance who knows.

Other than that I don't think there are any available goalscoring midfielders of the required quality or at least not one that we wouldn't have to spend a fortune on but if it's potentially the difference between promotion and not then who knows how much the manager might squeeze out of the chairman.

I don't think you necessarily need one particular goal scoring midfielder, just a regular supply of goals from midfield.

Yes, Nolan's got 9 goals but apart from that they've only got 4 other goals from midfield. Same with Boro, Johnson's got plenty but apart from that O'Neil has 2 and that's it. Ours are more spread out, (11 between 5 players).

As long as they all keep chipping in, we'll be fine.

Although I'm hoping Posh get cut adrift at the bottom and we take Boyd off them. ;D

A few people have mentioned his name to me but watching him he doesn't seem anything special. I expect he'll get found out very quickly now people are more aware of him.

Is Boyd that useful? He might be one of these players to find the Championship a bridge too far

Seems to be doing alright so far, 11 goals, 7 assists.

Every time I've seen him he's been convincingly one of the best players on the pitch. Very talented. Probably lacks a bit of pace, but very good player/

I work with a Posh fan who raves about him every week.

He's done very well in a largely shit team (at this level). The three or four times I've seen him play he's stood out.

I've been watching different games by the sound of it then. :D

In general though is he that much of a goal scoring midfielder? He's a striker/winger and has eight goals this year four of which are from the penalty spot.

what was the name of that Villa youngster we were linked with? He sounded very promising. I wonder if any interest Billy might have had in him will be rekindled.

Marc Albrighton?

Hasn't got near the Villa first team but I wonder if when we were linked with him it was the start of brokering the Shorey deal and the media just got we were in talks with Villa and guessed the player?
