Garner - Doing Well

Lee Clark still believes in Garner:

LEE CLARK doesn’t just believe the best is yet to come from on-loan Town striker Joe Garner – he knows it.

The Galpharm manager is a long-time fan of the man he brought in from Nottingham Forest in the close-season.

And while the 22-year-old former Blackburn trainee is still chasing his first Town goal, Clark says his contribution has still been valuable this season.

Garner was paired with top scorer Jordan Rhodes, who notched his 12th goal of the season as League I leaders Brighton were beaten 2-1 on Saturday.

And the boss explained: “Joe’s work ethic, his application and the way he fights for possession allowed Jordan to concentrate on the other side of the game.

“It was easier for Jordan to get in for crosses and other opportunities because Joe was doing the dirty work for him.
“Joe is making a big contribution – look back to our wins against Orient, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons.

“But I know strikers have to score, and I desperately want Joe to get a goal, because when he gets the first, he’ll be up and running.

“I’ve monitored him for a long time, from when he was emerging at Blackburn, then through his time at Carlisle and Forest, and I know there’s so much more to come.”

Garner, who has made 17 Town appearances so far, hopes for an 11th start in tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area semi-final at Tranmere.

Victory would set up a Northern final meeting against his old club Carlisle, although both legs would take place after his initial loan expires on January 3.

Whether his Galpharm stint is extended remains to be seen, but the Lancashire-based player still has six games in which to add to his 29-goal career tally.

There's some good news, I think we'd all assumed he was a flop there looking from the outside and seeing "0 goals" against his name. Still, its goals that count in the end for a striker, so fingers crossed he gets the scoring touch back.

Good to hear that he is doing well finally but i still see him coming back to the city ground in jan as do i see bennett doing the same.

Not if he is setting up goals for other players; there have been times this season when have thought we could do with garner. Not for goals but for his workrate and aggresive approach.

Sorry, I don't buy it. He's a striker, he's there to score goals. I like him has a player and I think he has great potential, but 0 goals in 17 games is horrendous, whether your Wayne Rooney, Joe Garner or Eugene Dadi.

The fact that he has scored does worry me as well. We all know he is capable of scoring goals. I just hope his head hasn't dropped further, because if it has, when he returns he will be no where near the same player we all know

I saw the highlights on their game at the weekend and all he did was fall over looking for free-kicks. I din't see much of the 'work ethic'. Really hope he is doing well as I like him alot as a player, but he seemed to think he was a bit too good to be there imho

Here's Garner's stats from their website;
L1 Starts: 9, Sub: 6. Cup Starts: 1, Sub: 1.
2 Yellow Cards, 4 Assists, 0 Goals.

Only two yellow cards ? Are you sure you got the right player ?

He'd make a good scapegoat though for when the usual suspects aren't in the pitch. Especially if his confidence is already low. Lets really get stuck into him.

People will complain about David McGoldrick not scoring enough for us but then stick up for Garner. Double standards?

17 appearances and 0 goals is shocking.

Only 17 games? He's still got a long way to go:

Eleven months without a goal for a striker is the sort of form that would destroy most players - Ask Gary Birtles or if you're Emile Heskey it could seal your place in the England set up.

I think Joe Garner is a quality player, very hard working and I think he will come great soon.

No one will be more annoyed than Joe himself at not scoring, like PSR has said Heskey goes 11 months without a goal, yet when he is played at Villa or England, people always comment on how his presence is worth him not scoring as he allows other's to score.

It's very easy to call, but if he has played 17 games, he must be doing something right to be playing?

I'm sure we've had strikers that didn't score before.
Fashanu, Silenzi, Rosario spring immediately to mind. I'm sure the lad has a long career with us ahead of him.

David Johnson is still by some seen as some form of legend at Forest, despite scoring 46 goals in 148 games.

He had 1 good season where he scored 29 in 46, which leaves 17 goals in 102 games.

He benefits from being at the club when many of the other players were utterly shite.

Not starting for Huddersfield in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tonight. Hope he comes off the bench and does get his first goal!

I'm suprised he's not scored. He always looked good for a goal when he played up front for us.

His attempts at buying a free kick in their game against Brighton was classic Garner. :D

I for one certainly hope so.

He played really well at the weekend against BHA, managed to catch the game online, looked strong and confident with the ball. also he looked really unselfish, opting to set other players up instead of having a shot like he used to. i wouldnt mind having him back for the second half of the season.

The people who refer to him as a legend are typically the younger lads who have for comparison the likes of Gareth Taylor, Marlon King, Eugene Dadi, Scott Dobie, Neil Harris, Grant Holt etc etc.
