Forest boss Billy Davies wants return to the glory days

Forest boss Billy Davies wants return to the glory days

Billy Davies has urged Nottingham Forest to give him the tools he needs to lift the club into the top-flight.

The City Ground boss wants a long-term deal to give him the time to get them back into the Premier League.

Davies was impressed with his side’s dominant performance against West Brom - even though luck completely deserted Forest on the day.

But he knows there is still work to be done and criticised the club’s Academy for not producing enough young stars at a time when he is short on numbers and fielding a makeshift defence.

As well as that, his new-look strike force has yet to deliver and he needs new faces at the back before the window closes.

But Davies is also sizing up the bigger picture and wants greater involvement if he is to achieve his goals.

He said: “If the board are prepared to give me a five to 10-year contract and say ‘we trust you very much’, I would certainly recommend certain things as I have with the first team,” said Davies.

“Would I take a contract offer? Yes, if everything was in place. I have another two years on my existing contract, but we know that means nothing.

“The one thing I have to say I am disappointed about is what’s coming through the Academy, the back-up. We’ve not got enough quality coming through.”

Forest are the Championship’s big spenders after splashing out £6m this summer.

Davies criticised the club’s football consultant David Pleat last season after the failure to sign players in January window.

But the fiesty Scot wants the club to progress to the top-flight.

“I have that in mind. The club’s heading in the right direction and we’re in the right situation,” he said.

“But we’ll lose a lot of quality in certain areas until we can have a settled side.

“We’re not ready to set a benchmark against teams like West Brom unless we have a settled back four.”

Forest deserved at least a point for their battling display after going behind to a Wes Morgan own goal, but Rob Earnshaw missed a second half penalty that would probably have earned them that.

“We’ve been working hard on our defending, but should have killed the game off,” said Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo.

The City Ground boss wants a long-term deal

The other day, Fernando Torres signed a new "Long Term" deal with the Scouse.

It took his contract from one that ended in 2013 to one that ended...in 2013.

It upped his pay significantly, though.

That's not a story, that's an animated image of a barrel being scraped.
Does Geoff Puddle still work there...

If I was Doughty, I'd be drawing up a shortlist for a new manager now. Davies is making his excuses for failure already. Sounds very familiar for Derby fans

Well done Billy, you've done a great job with the first team and I hope that continues but keep your gob shut. As far as I'm aware you've no great reputation for bringing through kids, so I think we should leave that to Nick Marshall and his staff.

It's a bit of a bizarre interview, but I'm not overly concerned about it.

I can imagine quite a few managers would pine for a five to ten year contract, but they ain't going to bloody get one. If you want to interpret it as Davies angling for a pay rise, you can, but you could also read it as a statement of his commitment to the club in the long-term.

After over a decade of instability, having a manager at the helm for a while does certainly appeal and it would be good for the club - yet I don't think it's wise for us to bet a five year deal that Davies is the man.

As for the academy comments, I have no doubt that there are plenty of people working hard and generations of talented youngsters tend to come in batches. Paul Hart reminded us when he was manager that it would be a while before we got another set like Jenas, Reid and Dawson. Hart was right.

If Davies says he's disappointed with the academy then I guess you've got to listen to him and wonder if there's something we could improve. Having said that, I do believe that Moloney will make it with us, and Thornhill has the raw materials.

Has Davies brought his brother in to run one of the teams yet? Or has he pushed his kids into the Academy like he did at Derby. If not, maybe that's why he's not happy with it.

Is anyone else finding Billy's little outbursts here and there tiresome?

I'm 100% behind what he's doing with the side, but I just don't think there's any need to spout stuff like this all the while. We've got an academy to be proud of from where I'm stood and yes there might be a bit of a dry spell at the moment but that's how it goes isn't it. You can't have a Jenas or even a McGugan every season.

He should get on with his job and keep his gob shut to the papers. He's got a long contract. No one has a 10 year contract, that ridiculous. If he's doing a good job it will get extended when it runs out.

A 10 year contract would mean a massive pay out should he leave.

I like what Davies is doing but his outbursts in the press are getting far too regular. Get on with the job, sign a defender and recall Moloney and Thornhill as soon as possible.

That's our youth talent. They're not here because he sent them out.

If he can get the job done at the end of the season , he can talk about his contract situation but certainly not when he's 2 matches in into the new season.

This is billy being billy , looking out for no.1 .

I read a similar article in the Sun this morning. I personally have no objections to this, in fact I welcome the stance. Billy shows similarities with a certain Brian Clough and given a bit of time for this team to gel and his methods to be instilled within the club, I can only see us progressing forward.

Exciting days are not far away, I am sure of it. Sod the transfer committee let's get it on :)

No not yet. He also hasn't brought in Steve Howard, Gary Teale or Claude Davies or a load of over paid journeyman like you lot said he would.

Even Grand Master Hart said when he was manager the conveyor belt of Michael Dawson,Andy Reid and Jermain Jenas's of this world is slowing and will break down at some point as you can't always rely on getting a great player out the academy every season.

I'm confused. If his two year contract means nothing, why on earth does he want one for 10 years? ::)

Tbh I am a little pissed off with his comments about the youth system its this same system that gave him the "young players" he praised so highly on many a occasion last season, the very players like lewis that helped keep us up and actualy get us promotion in the first place.

his outbursts are getting a little borring now the commitee is there to protect the club against such managers as billy davies who want to have full controll, and as billy says the average life span of a manager is 13 months, so why the hell would we want to allow him full controll over transfers when he isnt likely to be here at the begining of next season.

nothing he says or does will change nigels mind over the way transfers are handled it does apear he has taken a positive step in dealing with the actualy talks himself (doughty) as opposed to MA screwing it up, I would hate for us to end up getting into another situation that platt got us into.

Hmm, only Lewis and Perch came through the youth system (and Wes at a pinch - he joined later).

It's hardly loads.

Wes was pants at Dunkirk... All the Forest board turned out for them to get slapped 4-2 by Rolls Royce in the CMSD. Aaron Potter -left or right wing, released by Forest for being too small, ran rings around him.

I remember someone on here not very long ago saying we had a crop of 14/15 year olds that were the best we'd ever had, including the best striker of his age in the country...

Trouble is because of the variation in development physically at that age, someone who is top of their peergroup at 14/15 won't necessarily continue to stay in that position as they mature into adulthood.
