Coaching Appointments
Thu 30 Jul 2009
Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies has made two additions to his coaching staff at The City Ground.

Davies has appointed Chris Fairclough to the role of assistant first team coach, while Darren Robinson is the club's new performance coach.

Former Forest defender Fairclough has been a key coaching figure in the club's Academy for several years and was most recently responsible for the club's Under 18 side.

Davies drafted him into his first team coaching set-up towards the end of the season as an interim measure but has now decided to make the appointment a permanent arrangement.

Robinson, a qualified coach, sports scientist and sports psychologist, moves to The City Ground after a three-year spell with Coventry.

He has also worked in rugby league. Davies said: "We have promoted Chris from the Academy to first team. First and foremost he's a wonderful human being, he has great man management skills and is an excellent communicator.

"We've brought him in to work with the defenders. That's a critical position and one that he played very well in, so it made a lot of sense to use him in that way.

"Darren has got a wealth of qualifications across the board. It's his job to work on the players' fitness and conditioning, as well as looking at the many different aspects of their performance.

"Again he's an excellent addition to our staff and both Darren and Chris have settled in very well and both have contributed brilliantly so far to the development of the team."

not matt mills, sorry!!

I've been saying since Megson was here that we should be looking for someone versed in Sports Psychology.

Good move IMHO.

Interesting, his son Jordan has been involved in a lot of the first team friendlies so maybe he will feature this season?

He had a cracking game at Rotherham.

Really? He's a great, down to earth guy as well. Not one of these who think they're too big for their boots etc. Just a shame that we have so much cover for right-back really (Gunter, Perch, Chambers) because he is very talented. Hopefully he'll be sent out on loan though.

Aye, the Rotherham game wasn't exactly a thrilling team performance but Jordan Fairclough did well with his defensive duties - looked calm and composed on the ball, and got forward well on occasions too.

The polar opposite of Diagne at left back lol

Wasn't Diagne preferred position at center back ?! I saw from the highlights from the rushden game that Mitchell also seemed to be playing right back so it was square pegs in round holes so who knows what Davies was doing ?

I'm not sure, to be honest.

He was awful at left back though!

I'm not sure where Mitchell played at Rushden but he did have a stint at centreback as a sub against the Sadpies, and looked pretty good with admittedly limited involvement.

I think with younger players it's important to find out what their best position actually is. There's certainly plenty of instances of players being 'converted' to a position which actually suited them better than where they thought they played best. Wes Morgan as a striker, Peter Cech as a winger anyone?

The 'converted role' stories are generally rubbish.

They tend to come from players having a few games in that position at school or something. Generally, if someone is good enough to play professional in defence, they are good enough to play amateur up front.

Darren Robinson is a very good addition to our back room staff. He was my tutor on my level 2 coaching course and he clearly knew his stuff, i'm very pleased to see him at the city ground!! Would prefer Matt Mills to have arrived though!
