Few questions for the old un's (sorry)

After watching the CLOUGH programme last night i got to thinking about what it would have been like following forest when CLOUGH first arrived at the club and the huge success we had in the late seventies and early eighties when we virtually won everything, i was only 5 years old at the time so i have no re-collection of the success at that time, so if any users on here have vivid memory's of that era would they mind answering a few questions?................

1. When CLOUGH was announced he was going to be the new FOREST manager what were peoples first thoughts on the appointment?

2. Was there a certain match that you watched and thought that FOREST were capable of being a top footballing side?

3. What player was your favourite from that time and why? Looking back at the ex FOREST players from last nights programme i bet it's a hard decision?

4. Which player were you gutted to see leave the club?

Looking forward to any answers.

1. My Grandfather, with my own father took me along to see my first Forest match in 1967. He was so ill and aware the end was around the corner. Dad and Grandad talked about the new appointment on that nights visit, Grandad said, that Forest would be alright now, pleased my Dad and I would be able to see it. Hell of a memory that one. Excited, could not describe the anticipation.

2. Championship winning season, Man Utd away, absolutly murdered them 0-4, could have been double that. I think that is when I realised we could go all the way and win the league.

3. So many, so many differing reasons. I loved Kenny Burns, hard as Nails and could play football, Robbo was an absolute wizard, Woodcock........Oh the thrills

4. Kenny Burns, never really recovered from his knee injury

1 Bloody hell he was at Direby! followed straight after by they were s**t like us and won the league title

2 Same answer as sedge.

3 Robbo, just for being the most unlikely winger ever, to 'skin' any world class defender ever!

4 Thats a tough one so I'll cheat and say Peter Taylor, it was as if the club had lost its metaphorical right hand.

1 There was a bit of excitement, and a feeling that after the drudgery we'd witnessed the last few seasons things were looking up. I also remember expecting us to win his first game in charge, which we duly did in the cup. I don't remember any anti Clough sentiments because of the Sheep connection.

2) First game of the season away at Everton, we absolutely murdered them, it's one of the games that will always stand out in my mind

3) Robbo, pure genius

4) Tony Woodcock, I remember his last game and the crowd singing "Tony must stop". Unfortunately he didn't and we missed him massively.

1. When CLOUGH was announced he was going to be the new FOREST manager what were peoples first thoughts on the appointment?

Realy did have to pinch ourselves...couldnt believe that he actually came to us. To be honest, at that time we were so crap no one could ever have imagined the success he brought to the club, winning the next game would have been a miracle (and win we did, away to Spurs in a cup match, and I was there :)). As an aside, when the rumours about Clough comming started to gather pace my Dad, a huge fan, match sponsor etc. offered to pay his first weeks wages if he came. He did come but even after several letters the club never replied to him.....some things never change ehh.

2. Was there a certain match that you watched and thought that FOREST were capable of being a top footballing side?

For me it was a Anglo Scotish Cup game against West Ham. Memory is more than a little tarnished but sure the Hammers were a top flight club at the time and we absolutely anihalated them. Thats when I thought we had nothing to fear.

3. What player was your favourite from that time and why? Looking back at the ex FOREST players from last nights programme i bet it's a hard decision?

Robbo. Nuff said.

4. Which player were you gutted to see leave the club?

Think I'll go with Tony Woodcock as well. Couldnt understand it at the time, still cant even now.

1. It had been rumoured in and out of the Evening Post ever since the day he left Derby. It felt inevitable when he did arrive. The first season, not much seemed to happen. The Anglo-Scottish Cup and the arrival of Taylor began it all.
2. We were always a top footballing side, even under Billy Walker. I think the Duncan McKenzie 4 - Man City 1 game said it all, and that was well before Clough. Also, the 1959 cup final.
3. For me it wasn't hard. Robbo was a regular visitor to my house where his mate Jim McCann lived when I was a kid. He, through scoring or making the goal, won us both European Cups. He was the best Forest player I ever saw. He drank too much was a heavy smoker and was too fond of chips.
4. Robbo leaving for Derby sadly dissolved the Clough/Taylor partnership.

1. When CLOUGH was announced he was going to be the new FOREST manager what were peoples first thoughts on the appointment?

Due to circumstances I'd seen an awful lot of Clough's Derby team as a young lad. When he became Forest boss my old man, chuffed to bits, took me to Forest because he loved the Clough way. By that time I was already red in any case and I eagerly lapped up the following years. Didn't get to see them away in Europe until much older but saw all the home games we could get to - magical times. I'm priveledged to be one of a few who saw all of Clough's great sides.

2. Was there a certain match that you watched and thought that FOREST were capable of being a top footballing side?

I guess it was quite early on - we absolutely stuffed Manchester United at Old Trafford - You knew then that something special was happening in front of us.

3. What player was your favourite from that time and why? Looking back at the ex FOREST players from last nights programme i bet it's a hard decision?

Robbo. Just magical. Those who didn't see him at his peak really don't know how good he really was. Up there with the very best and in my eyes still the best left winger I've ever seen. I liked Martin O'Neil too - overshadowed by his partner at Villa but a great player. Burns scared the hell out of opposition forwards and if you got past him Shilton was waiting for you.......
John Mcgovern was not a favorite at the time - but I saw him at Derby and then Forest and am convinced that without him a lot of what Clough acheived may not have been possible. Grossly underrated.

4. Which player were you gutted to see leave the club?
Tony Woodcock.

1. Massive excitement. Went down to Spurs for the cup replay - an unlikely team we put out, but we did have some talent. Many forget that although Clough brought the best out of them, many of the players he moulded were already here. Robbo, Bowyer, Viv, MO'N, Woodcock, to say nothing of a number of useful other players at the club. I think Georgie Lyall was still there, Middleton (who was later replaced by Shilts, Richardson (quite useful at that level) and Sammy Chapman (the Wes Morgan of the club at the time - a true fighter, if a little lacking in class).
2. Realised that we were going somewhere when it became obvious that clubs were finding us increasingly difficult to break down. I suppose the first match of the 1st div season at Everton showed that we couldn't be taken lightly by the old establishment.
3. Favourite player was Shilts - massive. He was brilliant at one-on-ones. Why? Because he practiced all the time at it. Even when we were slightly exposed at the back because we were pushing for goals, he could be relied upon to do the extraordinary. He was also the best-paid player in Britain for a time - reported to be ÂŁ1250 per week.
4. Gutted about Collymore leaving. I wondered why we didn't try harder to keep him. Did he have a clause in his contract? Forest didn't seem to realise that he was worth his weight in gold. He was scoring about 2 every 3 games. He scored about 1 in 2 at Liverpool and much less when he went to Villa. Forest had a clever midfield which based all their play on letting Stan run at the opposition from the half way line. He terrorised them! They didn't know whether to s--t, shower or shave.

Was Clough taking over a massive shock? Did his stock fall a lot after the Leeds stint?

In terms of a shock appointment, which manager would he compare to of today if a new appointment was made?

1. I was only about 8 at the time and was just getting round to supporting Forest.  I was aware that Mackay had previously gone to Derby and that Alan Brown was crap.  I knew Brian had done well before and was as pleased as an 8 year old can be when he joined us.

2. I started going regularly in 1976/77 when my dad decided I was old enough to go with my mates (50p in those days).  We were a reasonable side in that season but not outstanding.  I think it was Shilton's first game (2-0 vs Villa) where we just commanded every aspect of the pitch when I thoughg we couild do it.  I was really pleased to see the "Brian Clough's Bionic Bubble Will Never Burst" banner on Wednesday's documentary - I remember it well.  It summed up the feeling us versus the establishment that did not believe we were good enough to be where we were.  I suppoe Forest in some ways were the "punk rockers" of football.

3. Definately Robbo - he was simply awesome.  In those days defenders were allowed to tackle you and he just took the piss.  I'd like to see Ronaldo play in 1977 conditions - I guess he'd do f*** all and would probably run off to Portugal crying after coming up against the defendes of the day.  To quote Cloughie in 1980 "Manny Kalz?  We've got a little fat man that's going to turn him inside out".  and he did too.

4.  John Roberston again - broke my heart when he went to Derby, even if he was getting past his sell by date.

Interesting stuff. A lost world I sadly will never be able to witness. The man is a true hero of mine, I'm glad I had 7 years with him still being our manager from when I first went to the City Ground.

The European Cup wins are a little like the Roman Empire, you know it happened and appreciate the orgies, but sadly will never take part.

1) First thoughts was, where has he been for the last few months, then Direby reject then look what he did for them.....was quite excited.

2) United at Old Trafford. I hated them for being so popular and so arrogant.

3) Robertson for being the most unlikely footballer ever but so bloody good on his day. I also favoured defenders like Burns, Needham, Lloyd as I played centre half. So much fun to kick people in the air with a role model.

4) Was gutted to see Woodcock leave, it seemed so strange. Was also sad when Robertson and John O'Hare left for differing reasons. Favourite players for a long time and way past best but it was the end of an era and you just knew it was never going to be the same again. Now look at us.

Don't agree with this. In 1973/4 when Brown was in charge we finished 7th in the league and got to the sixth round of the cup and we would have got to the semi final if it wasn't for a load of spoilt goerdies invading the pitch and the cowerdice of the FA. We also dumped Man City 4-1 in the cup....now that was a game.

First season under BC 17th! Second season 8th. Third season..................well if you think we were lucky to get promoted last season you should have been there in 77! How many games did Bolton lose in a row to gift us third place?

After that things changed but I don't like to see Alan Brown badmouthed.

Generally very pleased, felt a bit sorry for Alan Brown, but we knew BC played good football and I and most people were excited by the prospect. When we won in the cup at Spuds this filled us with real anticipation. Just to echo a little of what Sedgred said earlier Forest had always been a good footballing side in fact if you listen to the commentry on the 59 cup final at the kick off the commentator says "this Wembly pitch will suit Forest's style of play" ( did you know Alan Brown played for Luton that day?).

2. Was there a certain match that you watched and thought that FOREST were capable of being a top footballing side?

As I said above Forest were always a top footballing side. People forget we were good before Clough and we will be good again.

But in the context of the championship season to me it was a gradual awareness, the loss at Arsenal rattled me a bit but by Dec17th at OT we were something special.

One game I always remember was the following season when we put a poor Chelsea side to the sword 6-0 in a very professional manner.

They were all f**kin heroes man.......but Robbo was a God.

4. Which player were you gutted to see leave the club?

I felt really bad when Trevor Francis left. I think that had we been able to keep the Francis / Woodcock pairing we would have won more Championships.

Looking forward to any answers.

1) Too young, not much thought, sorry.

2) I remember seeing us beat Spurs in the FA Cup. Early days clough, 77 or 6 ish. (can't remember who scored) I thought we were Brazil of England. I was 9 or 10.

3) Just for the one goal and his contribution to Forest, Gemmil. Goal, for Scotland. When he walked around all and put the ball in the sack. That was legend stuff. And he was RED!

4) Roy Keane. Cloughie knew he was class. He proved it. Just not happy how he left.

Re newcastle, we let ourselves down a little there , 3-1 up as I remember, when a fat old geordie led a charge of a about 100 geordies and got the game stopped, at that point we agreed to return to the pitch some 20 mins later as we were winning but then fell apart. It was'nt until the press got on the backs of the F.A. did we put in a complaint and demanded a replay. Thats how I remember it. Having said that the grudge is still held against Newdastle to this day. P.S. I believe I scored in this game!
