The FA Cup Final used to be an all day thing. On both channels (Free to everyone with a telly).
It was the last match of the season and even devout supporters would favour one of the teams in the final (one day only).
Teams entering Wembley Stadium, Abide with me and the National anthem sung by all. Then 99% of the time a game to remember.
Dinner time would show interviews with supporters and celebs, the team coaches on their way to Wembley Way, local streets and avenues were empty of people. Kids would re-enact the final itself after on the streets or playgrounds. Apart from a few (Cloughie included) it was the best prize of the year.

Now its - play your second string team, hope for the best, pick on a scapegoat and make excuses that there are bigger fish to fry
or
just another boring game
Another illustration of money ruining football.

I agree with all of that, but part of what made it special was that it was one of very few games shown live on TV. In the 70s you’d get the FA Cup Final, the Home International tournament (for those too young to know, this was an end-of-season four-team league in which England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland played each other) and maybe the European Cup Final (not sure that was every year either until more English teams started winning it). No League games were live, nor were FA Cup ties apart from the final, the FA Cup semi-finals and the League Cup Final were played at the same time as the league programme with only highlights shown later. So the FA Cup Final (and thus the whole tournament) had a real sense of occasion and was something that all fans looked forward to.

Now there is such a saturation of televised football that for the viewers it is largely just another big game among dozens and for the players its significance has been reduced because of the financial imperative to prioritise other tournaments. And that’s before you consider the way it has been cheapened and the odds deliberately stacked towards the bigger clubs, even if they often treat it with contempt unless they get to the last four and finally decide to try to win it.

You missed the schoolboys international. That was the only other game they used to show live.

Blimey, yes, that rings a faint bell now you mention it.
They always played a game at Wembley either just after or just before the end of the season in front of thousands of screaming school kids. Looking back through the archives, some decent top flight footballers and future internationals played in some of the 70s teams before they became famous. Guys like Ray Wilkins, Peter Reid, Kenny Sansom, even our own Gary Mills played one year.

Yes, my first visit to Wembley was a school trip to a schools international in about 1976. I was keen to go as nothing in my time supporting Forest up to then had suggested I would ever go there to see Forest. I’d forgotten that some of those games were on the telly.

If it was 1976 you would have seen Clive Allen and Andy Richie amongst others!

Might have been 1975 then. I don’t recall their names. Next time I’m in the loft I might dig out the programme and remind myself who made it from that team…
The only one I've heard of from 1975 is Ray Ranson from Man City. If you want to see all the schoolboy internationals and who made it into league football then you can see them here:

Thanks. I reckon it was indeed 1976 as I think I remember England won 4-1, which would make it the Wales game in March, including the players you mentioned.

We used to go on a school trip early- mid sixties. Train from Nottingham Victoria. My mind tells me Shilton played in goal one year but that may or may not be true :)

Ah yes, the train trip…. I know you seldom see the best of a place through a train window, but I distinctly remember on that trip to Wembley someone from our school leading a chorus of “Nottingham’s better than London, we all agree!”…
