Billy Davies and Neil Warnock were locked in an angry war of words after Crystal Palace defender Clint Hill floored Nottingham Forest winger Paul Anderson in the 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.

Darren Ambrose's 40th minute free-kick gave Palace a lead that was cancelled out by David McGoldrick's leveller three minutes after the break.

But Forest manager Davies was enraged after Hill appeared to elbow Anderson on the stroke of half-time, sparking a melee in front of the dug-outs.

Davies leapt to his feet - and the atmosphere became even more charged when the Crystal Palace radio commentary was fed through the stadium public address system just as the commentator described the visiting manager as being "out of his pram".

Hill and Forest right-back Chris Gunter were booked for squaring up to each other during the skirmish.

But the Palace man escaped further punishment after referee Graham Horwood decided the challenge was not deliberate.

Davies said: "I would say it was a red card. And when Neil Warnock doesn't complain to you at the side of the pitch then you know he also knows.

"He's a very fortunate manager and he's a very fortunate player because it was a very blatant elbow in my opinion.

"The referee says there was no malicious intent which I find quite staggering.

"Paul Anderson is okay, but he's a lucky boy. The medical people wanted him to come off straight away and he didn't look too comfortable.

"I was out of my pram because I'm trying to protect my player, 21 years of age who had just been hit in the head. And I'm really sorry if I've upset this tannoy guy. Tell him I'm sorry!"

And he added: "Neil's very good at making it look the opposite of what's happened. He's a great lad, wears his heart on his sleeve and I've great respect for him and what he has done. But sometimes he's on a different planet."

But Palace manager Warnock believes the referee got it right and was furious to discover Davies had described his side as physical and hard to handle.

Warnock said: "I think that's a disgraceful statement. If I'd spent nearly £4.5million on players, I'd probably say a bit less than that.

"He should keep his mouth shut and as how come we carved them up so often and created so many chances.

"I thought it was a yellow card, not a red card. It was a reckless challenge but it wasn't deliberate."

Ambrose had already tested Forest keeper Lee Camp with a fourth minute free-kick when he found the top corner five minutes before the break.

But McGoldrick's close-range finish from Lewis McGugan's low cross brought the visitors back into it, although Davies' side could not find the goal that would have brought a sixth consecutive victory.

Instead it was Palace who had the better chances to claim all three points with substitute Victor Moses somehow spooning over from just six yards.

And Camp produced an outstanding save to deny Ambrose a second goal with a point-blank volley.

If he'd have spent £4million he would have to have won the lottery.................GOD what a :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker: :w**ker:

The fact we spent 6 million on players shows we can play great football. AND we don't have to resort to dirty f***ing tactics to try and bully the opposition. Hope Ando's ok. I think anyone who has followed footy for a while knows Warnocks tactics though !

Phooey

He's just blowing smoke on the incident.

People will be so worked up anout what he says that nothing will happen about the actual clotheslining/tackle.

The man is much like a manager I used to like -but without the sense of fair play. :(

Warnock is a thug, and his teams always have thuggish tactics and push the boundaries of the rules of the game.

Remember it was in the home game against Warnock's shower that Guy Moussi was injured last year, when a Palace player seemingly deliberately did him against the touchline, and Guy wasn't the same player when he came back.

Warnock knows his player should have been sent off; that's why he deliberately got in the face of the linesman to intimidate him (another thing he's famous for).

At least Forest play the game the right way, and our players don't go out to deliberately take out an opponent; that is not the way the game should be played.

Hill should have been sent off, but the officials bottled it.

Typical Warnock comment, he is just the managerial version of Savage.

For someone who has been in management for 30 years and to have only really ' won ' one trophy :sarcastic: you'd have thought he would have learnt how to play football by now. I can't remember a Warnock team that played the ball on the deck and not in the clouds, nor have I ever heard of a Warnock team that has been praised for playing nice attractive football either.

Apparently he plans to retire soon, we can all pray i suppose . . . .

People sometimes say lay off him, he's just a pantomime villain, he's good for the game etc. I actually think this is true of Robbie Savage up to a point.

But warnock? No chance. The man has got less class than a steaming pile of horse shit. He's a dreadful role model for youngsters watching the game, is a proven cheat and is the single most appropriate reason for the word c*nt.

I'd never ever, ever want him to manage Forest and I mean this wholeheartedly when I say I'd rather see us drop into league two than lower ourselves so far as to appoint that smarmy twat as a manager.

bizarre that the football league show only showed warnocks 'statement' and didn't offer a replay of the incident. why not just ignore it all?

because they love our Colin just like they love Savage. He's probably viewed as such an expert on the game that his opinion is almost as good as actual fact, so why bother letting people make there own mind up.

I was hoping the Football League Show might have actually shown the footage so we could see what happened.

It seemed like a deliberate elbow because of the movement, and I don't think Gunter would have been so incensed otherwise and Anderson wouldn't have gone off it he hadn't been hit.

The referee was terrible yesterday. He allowed Colin w**ker to talk him out of sending Clint Hill off and he booked Victor Moses (rightly, though) based on crowd reaction because his back was firmly turned to the incident when Moses tripped Gunter.

Colin Fray reacted with shock when he saw the incident, so the referee must have been bad.
