Einar Jan Aas info/memories

Hello

I'm currently working on a project and am wondering if any of the older members of this board may have some useful info on an old Forest player.

Einar Jan Aas. From my research he arrived from Bayern Munich late in the 1980-81 season. Played a few games in the tail end of that campaign and a good handful the next year before a bad injury which ultimately put paid to his spell at Forest.

He had been a squad player at Bayern, although he had played for Norway against England a few months before his signing.

Anyone recall the circumstances of his arrival? I believe the back four at the time was getting on and he was signed as a younger name for the future, but was there any specific reason anyone recalls for Aas being selected.

Any memories of his brief stint? Was he any good? Details of his unfortunate injury. Any idea what happened to him since. I've read a few bits online saying he works in a bank in Moss, Norway.

Jackpot would be if anyone with a good programme collection had anything on him in the 80-81 or 81-82 seasons.

Thanks for any comments or info and good luck with the promotion chase. Would be great to have Forest back where they belong.

:)

Can't offer any insight / detail other than to say, in the brief time that he was with us, he proved to be one of the best centre halves that I have seen at the CG in the 40+ years that I have been watching the trickies - he was a great prospect. A big blow when he had to retire through injury. Memories................

Yep one of the best centre backs we have ever had, great reading of the game and apart from Des and Fiarclough my favorite ever centre back. Definately got some programmes in the loft will have a dig around later

Thanks! That would be great.

From what I've found so far it sounds like his injury was a freak accident from him treading on the ball away at Sunderland.

He did go on and have three years at Moss before retiring and went out on a high helping them to their first Norwegian title in 1987.

Sounds like a real lost talent.

He's mentioned in Maurice Edward's recent book about Clough/Taylor 'A Right Pair' - although unfortunately he is referred to as 'Ass' constantly in it!

I rated him as world class and remember he had Keegan in his pocket during the Norway Egnland game and then same agai in a Forest Southampton game. He was a different style to Burns and Lloyd , more continental. Good distribution and brillaint in the air. He looked like a Ruud Krol type of palyer that we needed especailly for our European games. Unfortunately he just tripped on hard ground at Newscatle or Sunderland (not sure) in a midweek game and never played for us again.
He was typical of Peter Taylors talent scouting .

I remember him joining, the press having a field name pronouncing his name "arse" and he proved to be quite good.

Bridportred has this linkie

Einar Aas
Position: Central Defender. Born: Moss, Norway. Signed from: Bayern Munich, March 1981.
Debut: 28 March 1981 vs Norwich City Sold to: Released, July 1983.
A tall, talented Norwegian international, Aas (correctly pronounced "Orse", but the poor man never stood a realistic chance of that happening!) was signed by Brian Clough at the end of the 80-81 season in an attempt to replace the ageing Burns / Lloyd / Needham defensive combination that had stood Forest so well for the previous 3 years. In the few games that he did play, Aas looked a class act (modern readers should think more at the Sami Hyppia rather than the Jon Olav Hjelde end of the Scandinavian Central Defender Scale!). He was, however, badly injured in November of 1981 and never played for Forest (or anyone else) again. A great shame - he could have been a Des Walker 3 years ahead of the real thing.

Is it true, or urban-myth, that he was ever part of a back-four that could've been ordered thusly:

Anderson Smelt Burns Aas

?

If not, it's a crying shame.

Whoever digs out the old programme first, can you scan the pic of him eating that enormous stick of rock, please... That's the photo I remember....

Thank you!

Smelt was a keeper, he did however play in one match with Aas, a friendly at Cardiff in April 1981, which the line up was: Smelt, Anderson, Gunn, Aas, Needham, McGovern, Walsh, Ponte, Robertson, Francis and Ward, so in theory you are right.

Funnier than the 1990 team where we had Currie and Rice at 10 and 11 respectively.
