This is where I think the crux of the matter lies. Football fans, and sporting fans can be quite cutting in the way in which we act. We've seen action taken against fans for 'tragedy chanting', racism, sexism and various other things, including some getting time in custody as a result of their actions. Why should someone be immune because they're holding a banner? As you say, if anything, thats far more premeditated than a lot of the other things I've mentioned. I'm sure if Forest fans displayed some disparaging thing about Steve Parish (or other club owners) and actions which may be illegal, then our own fans would say that we deserve what we get.

At the same time, Marinakis legal team obviously have some belief that they're going to have some success here. I can't see a compensation outcome, but, more, a full apology for actions on all forms of media.
Other than not appealing the pathetic, tap-on-the-wrist FA fine, I'm pretty sure that CP as a club/Parish as its chairman have never even acknowledged the banner, let alone condemning it.

In fact, the clear implication from Parish and the virtually unsolicitered accusation from Parish's mouthpiece at Sky Sports (that Kaveh-bloke), that EM demanded a sanction against CP from UEFA in that "letter" (the actual contents of which have never been made public) can, I'd argue, be viewed as encouragement to create and display it.

EM has given CP/Parish almost a year to unequivocally condemn it, and so good for him in going down this road in the absence of even any hint of an apology.

I am just writing out my banner to take into the City Ground tonight calling you a pedo 👍
No, no, no, you've got it all wrong. What you need to do is write he "isn't a pedo", it's a very smart work around which bamboozles lawyers and judges, and means you can say absolutely anything you want on a banner.

Parish has repeatedly fed into it. Blaming Marinakis for them being demoted to the Conference League, Palace never publicly apologising nor saying the banner was out of order. Even when they won the conference I think he made some crack about the good guys winning.

It's a weirdly one sided thing from them. It was inevitable that at some point they would poke him 1 too many times.

I'm not sure EM is going after a penniless fan with the banner defamation case. Possibly he just wants to be found not guilty of any of the slurs on the banner, so he won't be looking for piles of cash, just innocence. And for an apology by all concerned.

Slight tangent. I read somewhere that part of the display for the first home game after promotion against Wet Sham was not allowed by the club. Someone on here must no what it was?
Do you mean Forza?

I don't know for sure, but at the time I interpreted it as they got caught out by the new camera position being added to the front centre of the Tent End Upper Tier - which has meant banners can't run the full length anymore.

Just go on their forum, it’s embarassing

Apparently Parish should hire a private investigator to get dirt on Marinakis in the court case, and apparently Parish has a brilliant record in court cases (a year after he lost one).

It’s barely even tribal at this point, they just repeat blatant lies like they are true. Then again they spent all last summer doing it too. His case should genuinely use their forum as examples. And to emphasise the ridiculousness of this entire thing, he still hasn’t actually done anything!
Holding up their forum posts probably does Marinakis Barristers job in court for him. It quite literally proves everything.

Marinakis has a global business, how many homes across the world is the incomparable and always perfect sky sports broadcast on?
Now let’s drop into some hypotheticals, cos I know we all love them, someone was about to sign up and give ‘Marinakis big old cargo ship plc’ a lovely contract for a few billion pounds/euros/drachma but happened to be watching the coverage of the match… sees the banner, thinks “oh there’s no smoke without fire” and pulls out of the contract.

Its effect could have been massive, we don’t know as we aren’t employed by him. Even if this didn’t happen, it could happen next match after one of palaces brave balaclava boys decides to do another one… I bet they won’t after this.

If you were accused of being a pedo, dragged through courts, recieved reputational damage regardless of the outcome, you open a pub then the other local pub in the village put up a banner saying "StanleyVictorCollywobbles is NOT a pedo!" whilst decepting you putting a kid in a van.

Would you consider yourself thin skinned to sue them?

Not even a debate is it? The moment anyone depicts me as a van driver I'm phoning the lawyers.

Being honest, it would probably take any decent legal assistant a matter of minutes to pull that information from the site as well.

That's exactly my view on this - it's not about our little game of football, it's the bigger picture

Via hurty words

It was a shit joke and attempt at banter, from some thick fans. Palace shouldn’t have let it in the ground but f*** me.
Not 'hurty words' at all but deliberate, malicious thought out defamation of character, designed to provoke some sort of reaction. Probably not the one they were expecting.

Using a childish expression like 'hurty words' trivialises it.

He has several publicly listed companies on stock exchanges, all of which are open to investors

Reputational damage can effect the stock price

I support the Big Man’s decision.

CPFC are responsible for ensuring that all fans are vetted for inadmissible items. Given the weather that day it would not have been possible to ‘sneak’ the offensive banner into the stadium. When it was revealed CPFC should have confiscated it.

It’s sad that a CPFC has a significant minority of idiot supporters. On that day the great majority of their fans were perfectly fine. Just look at the behaviour of the ultras at Wembley standing on barriers with flares.

What is also concerning is that those in charge of admitting Forest fans behaved disgracefully. Despite being asked to arrive early the home stewards were not prepared leading to long queues with no thought for the young, the elderly and the disabled.

I’ve been to the ground many times and in recent years have travelled on the Official NFFC Disability Coach parking adjacent to the away turnstiles (alongside other away coaches). On this occasion we were denied access through the barrier and had to depart in moving traffic with no clarity where we would alight the coach after the game.

I raised an official complaint with CPFC - their most senior officer dealing with such issues confirmed that it should not have happened. The officer was away from the UK meeting representatives of the Clubs Palace were playing in Europe. It was clear that others had taken advantage of her absence to create havoc for Forest fans. It reflects our view of the poor administration of Palace.

Fortunately the Palace officer ensured that proper arrangements were followed for away fans at the next and remaining Palace home fixtures.

Hopefully our owner will receive a public apology; and also the Palace fans responsible receive banning orders.

As ever LR, a sensible, considered and articulate response - unlike mine.

Probably the best post on this subject. Palace knew of the banner and condoned it. All through these sorry episodes they can’t resist snidey digs.

I do have to laugh that Marinakis usually goes for managers who are unattached to other clubs. Yet, in this rare instance, he's pinched Crystal Palace's manager from them.

Part of me does wonder how much of that change of tact was influenced by this banner lol.

Well, yes and no... It was clear midseason that Glasner would be leaving at the end of the season and I think we still had Dyche at that point. let alone appointing VP, and there was a reasonable chance that Glasner could have gone somewhere else, and that this didn't materialise (e.g. he fancied the Liverpool job which went to Iraola). Unless it was clear that the club had already sounded out Glasner at that point and then decided to give the job to VP until the end of the season, like we did with O'Neill and Lamouchi, it seems also to be potentially likely that there was the plan to stick with VP after last season, Glasner going somewhere else, and then whilst this didn't happen and Glasner was available, they decided to go for it. But technically, he had left Palace before he was appointed to us.

I don't think the banner or the fact it's Palace had a lot to do with it. In a couple of seasons (and we thought Hodgson did a good job) he's won the FA Cup and a European trophy with them when they don't have a lot of resources. He's taken them probably as far as they can go, we have potentially a higher ceiling than them, so clearly he wants winners (and you can see that logic in hiring Ange who has actually always won things in his 2nd seasons, even though it was never going to work for him here) and Glasner fits that. Speaking of Hodgson I think also Palace were disgraceful there when he was clearly having health issues and had been pulled out of retirement when Vieira almost took them down and then they were planning to sack him just before he got hospitalised...

Has to have something to do with the banner and legal case
What a bunch of self-important twats.

"We are going to stop attending Palace games all dressed the same and acting like tits. Instead, we will be attending Palace games dressed differently to each other, and acting as individual tits. Also, we didn't take any money while doing the above, which makes us proud of ourselves. We did not take this decision lightly."
