Don't know if anybody has mentioned this but...

Does anybody think Billy Davies was a bit negative before the game, playing us down by saying i hope our team can be like cardiffs team in 2 years time?
Surely we want to be as good as Cardiff now??

I think it's about time people stopped taking everything Billy says literally :)

He had a gameplan, and it wasn't far off working - even with injuries.

He talks us down to keep our expectations down so the fans are less likely to get on his back if we fade away into mid table obscurity. it's very smart of him but secretly i think he knows we've got a chance of doing something THIS season.

Its a way of pleasing the fans. If you prepare for it to take two years and it takes less than that, it makes the progress curve seem very steep.

You're right, but in fairness what he says is sort of true isn't it?

I realise he'd probably just say these things anyway to keep fans grounded, but if you consider where we were last year as opposed to Cardiff what he's saying is actually very true and we should count ourselves lucky that we're just comfortably enjoying championship football again.

Lets say we don't go up this season. It's very easy to assume we will be better next season. I was just thinking if there was any evidence of clubs always talking about next year in the league and it not quite happening?...Apart from Liverpool for the last 18 years or whatever
I'm not trying to be negative. I was just wondering if a similar club to Forest had a false dawn in the Championship?

There are lots of clubs in this league apparently terminally talking about next season...

Think Ipswich, Crystal Palace, Coventry, QPR... actually scrap that, pretty much the entire division.

We don't hear what he's saying behind closed doors, could be giving the players a completly different message.

Davies is a repetitive talker because he's a straight talker and won't be draw into contradicting himself or changing his message when the same old questions keep coming up. I'm sure he'd have been happy for to have said about his expectations and the progress of the club just the once, before the season began, and the press and fans accept it and move on.

We may even see one of the non-Billy signings move on in the window, if he doesn't fit the long term plans and Davies believes the club will finish well without him. Also there's nothing to say he won't get to December with us right up there conceivably then decide we have genuinely arrived a year earlier than planned and make the investment after a rethink with Nigel and his wallet. I'm sure two key signings or so would be plenty until we get promotion money to spend.

We'll see though, eh? It's not so much about Forest, this tight top of the table, as about the other teams and how quickly they'll lose pace. I think we can plod on like this for some time if we're arsed. Let's see how Boro do under Gordon, how Hughton ****s it up now he's permanent, how the Baggies keep it going and how Cardiff fare away at the Liberty without the Phantom of the Chopra.

All we need is to get Dex back and reintroduce McGugan and McLeary a bit, and we can progress form there.

I agree. Which non-Billy signing could be moved on you reckon? Earnie would be first choice and then possibly Garner or Perch. Can't see him offloading a striker unless he has another lined up.

If he says were in the promotion race and we end up 12th, the fans begin to turn on him.

If he says 12th is the aim and we end up in the promotion race, he starts to look like the new Messiah. Even if we finish 8th or 9th weve overachieved.

Go figure

Earnshaw, Smith, Perch, Garner. Not necessarily in that order but I'd think they were expendable in this set up (I'd love Garner to stay and make it with us though because I still think he's a good player - just not a right winger).

Expectation is at the root of all disappointment. Managing expectations is the responsibility of any Manager. Wenger does it very well, although this year he has stated that Arsenal 'should' be winning silverware. If BD made the same statement we'd all think him mad.
