Dodo (Domilson dos Santos)

I too was under the impression that it was going to be quality over quantity this summer.

I know it doesn't always work this way but generally 'quality' costs and £8m doesn't 'normally' buy you a great deal of quality in the Premier League these days. So the fee suggests a squad player rather than a bona fide starter.

Of course it might just be a very shrewd bit of scouting but it does seem as if this lad was our 3rd choice at best.

Perhaps someone cleverer than me can explain how we can sell Elanga for £55m, a few others combining to another £50m or so and then drop £205m last season (according to Transfermarkt) but this season we have already brought in £130m+ with more to go and seem to be negotiating every single penny and seemingly missing out on targets as a result. Is it a result of all the money we wasted last summer? Or just the transition to SCR from FFP which non-cartel clubs are struggling with? Both of which I could accept.
You've answered your own question pretty much. Last season clubs like us used up whatever headroom they had to spend up to their PSR limit. We were over the SCR limit (but not so much that we'd get a points deduction were it in place) so some of the income we get in has got to be used to meet the limit.

It's also worth remembering that under PSR 100% of the profit from last summer's sales went into the calculation so we could spend a lot more when you take account of amortisation and still meet PSR. Under SCR only a third of the profit goes into the income calculation each season so you have to be a bit more careful in what you spend.

Makes sense. Cheers

Out of interest where does the other 2/3rds go, is it spread over a 3 year period or something?

Or, bear with me, it actually had nothing to do with the fee and everything to do with what we were offering those players?

There is soo much more in a football transfer than the fee. As I understand it from people in the business, the fee generally is pretty easy to agree between clubs (apart from Sporting, who infamously play silly buggers with valuations). The hardest thing to agree with an in-demand player is their expectations on where they sit in the pecking order when they join - players want assurances of minutes, responsibilities etc.

It is f***ing hilarious by the way. When we look to spend massive money people spend the entire time telling everyone they are overpriced or they’re not worth it, and when we don’t spend massive money they question why we aren’t spending more money & are not opting for quality (for which there is no evidence of by the way)

What targets have we actually, officially been linked with but have seemingly missed out on because we have been 'penny pinching'?

We haven't heard a great deal about targets in truth, just rumours started by people with no actual knowledge or with a reason to sell a story whether that is true or not.

There is absolutely no actual evidence to say we've missed out on players due to us watching the pennies.

And we're probably watching the pennies to avoid a points deduction under the new rules, not that that should stop us critiquing the club for being sensible of course.

The only one that you could potentially say although there's nothing concrete to say it's fact is with Reid. There's a good argument though to say the club felt Dodo was less of a risk at more than half the price and you can't really argue with that logic.

I also think since EM bought us we haven't been afraid to speculate to accumulate or do a bit of horse trading. Sometimes, if there's value there, we buy and flip a profit later. I reckon Savona was similar - available at a lowish fee (10m euros?) so we get a decent player for a season or two then flip him on for a small to medium profit. Could say the same about Scarpa. If he makes it, great; if he doesn't, we make a profit. Win-Win.

Dodo has got an established good level career behind him at a good level club, the price is dirt cheap by today's PL standards and he's exactly the right fit for Glasner's system. If Read is still the dream on that right hand side and we have a chance of getting him next season, I am sure we'd have no problem whatsoever moving Dodo on again - we'd get most of our money back probably, or turn a profit on Aina if Dodo has passed OA in the pecking order by then.

Alternatively, the data might have Dodo much higher up on our Glasner list for RWB than he would have been at RB for previous managers. Who knows? We'll find out soon enough I suppose.

I just think there's enough noise, by enough sources, to suggest we're looking after the pennies a bit this summer.

Which is fine by the way, as long as we don't contradict that by leaking stuff to Percy etc about ambition as all it will do is create pressure. It would seem odd to me though if we bring in a top-level manager, give him 13m a year and not properly back him in a summer where we'll have probably brought in £150m in sales. Let's see what happens.

Twitter already speculating that we’ve signed him ( past tense ) only to loan him out to Olympiakos.
Silly season…

In fact, Roma had a €28mn offer rejected so Feyenoord wanted 30 or 35mn, so Dodo is less than a third of the price of Read

Imagine the online carnage if it were true 🤣 🤣 . With Sa it would mean we'd spent almost as much for Olympiakos as we had for us.

Funny thing is as well that because of amortisation even if we sell Savona for 12 million thats a bigger profit than 2 mill because his value on the books would be 8 for example.

If he does sign just hope no one starts a drinking game every time he goes down under a tackle and needs treatment and the phrase "Dodo dead" pops up. I don't think anyone's liver could take it.

Whereas I think that there is just enough noise for people who want to (not that I am saying you are by the way) amplify that noise, turn it into something it isn't and then paint the club in the worst possible light making it look like they have missed out on a plethora of signings either through deliberate procrastination or incompetence and that as such the team is going to fail and the expensive manager (who seems quite content and relaxed at the moment) is going to blow his top, potentially quit and drop us right back into a mess.

I realise that we all want to view things from a different angle and I will freely admit to having been very very critical of the club in the past but when there isn't a great deal to work with it is really galling to see people trying to put the worst possible interpretation on nothing not just as a one off but as a constant noise. (Again, not saying that is you).

That in turn brings out people who don't want to see anything negative said about the club and people snapping at each other claiming they are being ridiculed or shot down for having a different view. It's not needed really. Just give the club time to work through their plans, get behind the club and team and see what happens.

A little overview by Adam Summerton on X who covers Italian football on TNT

The first thing I’d say about him is his acceleration, he’s very quick and gets up and down the right flank. Carries the ball well, good dribbler, and although he can play RB or RWB, I’d say wing back suits him best. Says Cafu and Roberto Carlos are his biggest inspirations Names Roberto De Zerbi (Shakhtar) as the coach who’s helped him most on a tactical levelA frustration I’ve had when watching him is his end product - doesn’t always make the most of promising positions he gets himself in - should get more assists. That said, only 20 Serie A players averaged more key passes per-game last season. Often positions himself well to make interceptions - combined with his pace that could be particularly useful if Forest play how I’d expect under Glasner. Got a bad injury in his second season at Fiorentina but has otherwise been consistently available. Interesting that Brentford’s Kayode (who’s done excellently in the PL) couldn’t get past him in the pecking order at Fiorentina - although Kayode (22) is 5 years younger.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

I think people underestimate just how many moving parts there are to a transfer deal as well as having to satisfy the self interest of 4 different parties.

But we're Nottingham Forest.

We can sign whoever we want whenever we want for whatever we want.

It's really poor that the club doesn't seem to be able to realise this and just get things done.

We can also see evidence in this new "fairer" system (for the Big 6 at least) that they've been able to splurge Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, even Man City, while the rest of the league has had to be a bit more circumspect.

Look at how the vultures circled around Newcastle, Villa for example and scalped off the best players from those teams... It's not happened for while like this and is it a coincidence that in the first year of SCR it happens?

With player recruitment, unless it's a nailed on definite upgrade that would push for the first time (like Diomande) then we would be quite sensibly looking at the next 2-3 on the list to see if they prove better value - especially if the 1st choice is being touted at ridiculous sums and then negotiations are made to a degree of brinkmanship, to see if the hand can be forced with the top target(s)... It's just how negotiations work these days.
