I never knew that Djed was a muslim. Hoping to be England's first muslim player.

Came as a surprise, According to Middlesborough fans, he was never out of the pubs and clubs up there.
You can be a Muslim without being totally onboard with all of the beliefs (such as attending the mosque multiple times et al).

A Muslim colleague of mine described it as a bit like being a lapsed catholic.

I'm more surprised that Djed is England's first Muslim player than the fact that Djed is a Muslim.

I'm pretty certain Hamza Choudhury is Muslim and he's played for the England U21s.
He is but I think they're talking about the full side. There was a rumour a while back that Luke Shaw is actually a Muslim, but that sounds like it might not be true

Totally respect him choosing who he wants to be.

Nevertheless brave to make the statement.

He'll draw attention from the islamophobic minority element in the England fanbase while I wonder how the more fundamental section of the Muslim community will view Djed as a representative. (Not that he is casting himself in that role)

That said , great that he challenges stereotypes and prejudices.

No chance he’d be able to fast for a month
They only fast during daylight hours, which is much easier when Ramadan is where it was this year compared to when it's in June (e.g. the year the Grenfell fire was).

Can't disagree with that point though.

Joking aside, I don't know how professional athletes manage it. There are exceptions if you are ill but not for working, which presumably affects all sorts of people (and must be hella shitty for the Muslims working in food establishments preparing food all day for customers when fasting). We have/had a fair amount since promotion, Kouyate and Niakhate were, Sangare is, think Boly might be as well. The two French lads are of Congolese descent and might be, ditto Ndoye who is of Senegalese origin. Sometimes when football's going on during Ramadan they allow a break when it gets dark so the players can at least have a drink, which they aren't allowed to do of course in the daylight.

They're allowed to break their fast in the day as long as they pay a penance later, usually by donating to a charity. I'm actually surprised Spence is a Muslim and think he's either newly religious or one of those American nation of Islam people. His most famous photo for us was him smoking on a cigar after all which is haram.

Was he a Muslim when he was on the cigars after the play off final?

Although to be fair it wasnt lit as is weirdly often the case at these sorts of things.

That 'photo' doesn't exist.

Yes this has become a regular thing now, was introduced a few years back and the ref will know what time the player can eat so as soon as the ball goes out of play after that time they will stop the game so the player can have some of those gel type energy foods.

During fasting time not all people have to conform. Some jobs are ok to eat and drink, for example on a building site in 30 degrees of blazing sunshine.
Many stores actually put up a screen on the restaurant window so people eating inside don’t annoy those fasting outside.

They also have to get up really early to beat the morning deadline so after a month they are knackered.

See. This is what gets me. Media make a point of him being a Muslim, I totally understand the context of being the first Muslim to play for England, potentially.
But why oh why can we just not stick to the game, it’s never even been mentioned previously and I think he’s one of those players that lets his feet do the talking.

Our Viv made history based on skin colour at a time in the nation’s history where it really did matter to make a very big thing about it.

Don't see the problem, tbh.

Spence says he does not feel any additional weight on his shoulders because of his religion but hopes his story can lift others.

"I don't really feel the pressure for certain things. I just play football with a smile on my face, be happy, and the rest will take care of yourself," he added.

"If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it."

Full England international now. Really pleased for him.

Hilarious to think back to when Boro fans were happy to see him shipped out, because he had a bad attitude and Isaiah Jones was a better player. Jones is now hacking round league one for Luton.

That just made me laugh, i had completely forgotten about those twats chiming in throughout that promotion season talking about how much money we were making for them, with the worst player of the two.

Some absolute mental clubs and fanbases around, which i guess is part of the fun.

Well pleased for him, the young man deserves it.

:D Indeed, that was my main reason for posting it.

He reposted it on his story with a 'questionable' caption too 😂
