I thought he was the arsenal guy, obviously not if he's graduated from the academy

To be fair do you honestly think he would be breaking into the middle of the park this season ?

Nope, I don't think he'll ever break through to be honest...but it does worry me that Billy seems to view our youngsters as not even being last resort in most positions - better examples being Thornhill's pushing down the pecking order, Heath being loaned out despite being our only fit left back and Moloney being marginalised then loaned out when he was playing well...

I know where your coming from mate, and have spent some time pondering over this one, but................ I am sure we are going to crack on this year more than we have done in the last many with the way things are shaping up. This squad will feature wes, lewis, perch for most the season who came through the academy, personally i think thats about right, ratio wise. I think the Dawson, Jenas, Reid, Foy (foy who) was a one one off of exceptional talent !

I agree with you about Moloney and Heath but to be fair, with the players we brought in, how would Thornhill and Byrne not get pushed down the pecking order?

Bryne is a good player, he will gain some first team football.
I'm not sure if he will make it here though.

I can see it being a long time before anyone from the Academy breaks through under Billy.

Good!

Since the Jenas era 6/7 years ago we've only had one partial success in McGugan.

Thats a bit of a datf thing to say. Our acedemy has generated quite a few decent players!

Is rushden one of our feeder clubs or something? A few of our players seem to go there. And im sure wev played them in a few friendly games....

Byrne is a bloody good player and a loan move is definitely the best option for him. He was too good for the reserves last season but was never likely to be getting regular 1st team footie here at this stage.

A successful loan spell this season should see him in with a good chance of getting in the 1st team squad next year.

Why do they all keep going to Rushden though? Are they now our feeder side? We had Roberts and Maloney last year, Reid and Byrne this year. they must have some kind of agreement in place.

Tis good for him, actual competitive football that has a meaning to some people not like the reservesleague which was good to win but not really competitive enough. If BD has any sense and i'm sure he has then there will be recall terms in all the deals so if we do ever struggle for players these ones can be recalled at 24 hours notice.

The batch coming through now, McGugan, Thornhill, Reid, Moloney, Heath and Byrne have every chance of coming in to the first team in the future.

I think Byrne's one of few of the current crop who could actually make it. He's got clear natural ability, as opposed to some of the cabages who have come through the ranks recently. Perhaps it's a shame for him that we're probably now a league above where he would have had a chance but I'd certainly expect him to play league football for someone.

Speaking of which, what do you reckon Sven will make of Craig Westcarr :D :D :D

I hear they promised Sven the whole Jimmy Sirrel Stand. Who wouldn't jump at that offer?

Thornhill and Maloney have both showed that they will be able to cut it at some point. Byrne, Heath and Reid are all very good players too. Iv seen them in 10 or 12 reserve games and they are a cut above.

Just because we aren't selling players for £4mil at the minute, doesn't mean we aren't producing talent.

Folk said the same about Westcarr, Weir-Daley, Thompson, Bastians, Benechief (sp) Garner, Roache.

In a few years they'll be in league 1/2 or non league.

Obviously I hope I'm wrong, but the step up is far too great at this level and you need to really stand out. See the Bopp thread regarding how good he was for the reserves.

I think things were only said about Thompson and Bastians out of that group on any scale. Garner was from the Newcastle set up.

Bopp was from Bayern set up too.

Bopp was unlucky with a mixture of injuries and him being a cock. He could have been a very good player, I still remember that goal in the last 10mins against Gillingham to take them down to league one with us.

That goal was awesome!

However, he had to go for his disgraceful conduct to Gary Fleming's cat lol
