But its the boards "safety net" get out excuse, now Billy says he doesnt want them...cant blame him, they should be used to compliment the squad and in case of injuries...we cant rely on it..

BILLY Davies today warned that Nottingham Forest cannot afford to fall back on the loan market if they fail to make permanent new additions before tomorrow.

The Reds' chances of adding new faces before the transfer window closes are looking slim, with bids for Peter Whittingham and Darren Pratley falling short over the last few weeks.

But manager Davies today warned that the club cannot allow themselves to believe that temporary signings will fill the void he feels still remains in his Forest squad.

"The loan window is not an option for this club to go down and progress from where it was last season," he said.

The loan window is very appropriate for the situation we were in during the season before last, when we were hanging on for survival, when we had one foot in the grave when it came to relegation.

"We were staring down the barrel of a shotgun and we needed to do what we could.

"This is a different situation now. We are talking about a club that has finished third in the Championship.

"And for me, unless you are bringing in players of the quality of Craig Bellamy and Jason Koumas, it is not worth it.

"But those players do not come cheap. They come on very big money and unless you are willing to spend that, then the loan market is not for me.

"I have experienced and suffered in the loan market enough already over the years.

"If you are building a young team, building a squad, then you have to build on the wonderful foundations we have laid already.

"There is no point in us not doing that now, because we have put the work in."
 
The loan system –let’s be honest it is the standard excuse that the club use every summer and January. I do understand this will be more attractive than ever this season because of the new 25-man squad rules.

Although that won’t be just us that will take advantage of it, I know all the Championship clubs are looking at this too (many Championship managers have said as much even though they have already strengthened their squads).

We needed to get off to a good start to attract the top loan players, and at the same time Premier League players come with Premier League wages and again it will come down whether the club would be prepared to spend money on wages on short-term deals rather than long term investments.

But even using the loan system you can only have players for a maximum of 93 days, so does that mean more waiting? Will we not see anyone arrive till the middle of October so you can have them available for the busy festive period?

And every week we will still be wondering and asking Billy are we bringing in a player or 3, when all the main work should have been done already!
 
I kind of agree with him.

Look at Blackpool, they had a lot of successful loan players last season - now they're in the Prem they're struggling to fill the gaps in their squad from those they replaced.

With the fees being asked for Pratley et al (close to £3 mill) and wages 3 times the most we pay now, forget these boys and accept the loan market is possibly our only option.
 
Loans are better than nothing. If no one comes in on a permanent tomorrow and he refuses to accept any loans then the only people who are going to lose out are the fans. He's playing politics again like he did last January.

We might as well forget having any aspirations then because 3 mill is clearly what it currently takes to make progress. If we aren't making progress what are we all here for? I have no problem with bringing in Whittingham on three times the salary of Tyson or Anderson. When they score as many in a season as he did last year, they'll be worth the same salary. In fact if Ando/Tys had scored as many last year we'd be in the Premiership already and they'd all be on much better wages.

If the current team don't agree with the gap in wages they can play better, then earn more, can't they?

Its not three times Ando/Tys, but Earnie, Mckenna Camp etc saleries that are being asked. Who else do we see competing for Pratley/Wittingham at these transfer fees?
 
I'd take anyone we can get our hands on, atm we need quality and quantity and if quantity is all that's available I'd gladly take it for the short term until the TAP find the utterly butterly and manage to slide MA and ND's heads out of their arses!

Give it a rest. Anyone would think Billy Davies had bummed your gran. He's got the club's interests at heart he knows exactly what needs to be done in order for Forest to progress to the level that the board claim they are aiming for. It's not politicking it's football management.

It all just seems quite pointless without a little investment and risk. Thing is we're playing for the biggest prize there is now, and everyone knows how close we already are but you move forwards or backwards in this and anything else in life, nothing ever stands still and nothing is permanent. The cognitive dissonance apparently being shown by the club presently is not being addressed by the press. Are we competing in this league to win it or to tread water?
 
Can't see us getting anything like Pratley and Whittingham now, definitely not both. What the Welsh clubs (or the players, or their agents) are asking is blatantly beyond us and if that wasn't the case, I think we would have got them in before now, or at least there would be very strong rumours about them signing. As it stands my opinion is that the board aren't willing to over exert themselves financially. This is because either they 'have the club's interests at heart' or simply, because the money isn't there, and all this rhetoric from MA etc is merely a smokescreen. My opinion again is that NFFC will wait for -- at the earliest -- January next year, or more likely next summer, before trying to get the same players 'on the cheap'. The club and the powers that be frequently emphasise what a "long term project" getting Forest promoted is to be. The current situation regarding transfers really compounds this - why splash out when in 8-10 months time the same players will be available for free? It's very frustrating for us fans, but the club I feel won't budge from this ethos.

Whatsmore, people who have (relatively successfully) predicted signings in the past have gone very quiet. It's pretty obvious nothing will happen other than a loan or two, IF WE ARE LUCKY.

Ultimately, it is very disappointing, but at least we can have another (at least) go at the play offs if we can keep it tight away from home i.e. picking up points by drawing games and get as many wins as we can at home. There's no reason this current team cannot do well in the league this year, but a top three finish I just cannot see happening.

without the signings now and with the loss of players through injury, we will not be looking at another shot at the playoffs this year. Failure to move forward equates to moving backward - you have to change to move. The tide is already acting against us: there is an extra step needed to get us from here to there and the time for that first step has already gone.
I remember once being in a 200 metre race and missing the starting pistol - as the others sped away from me I remember an increasing feeling of dread that grew until, even though I was only a couple of paces behind the others, each subsequent step convinced me further that I was an inadequate runner - the proof being that I was not winning the race, therefore incapable of winning, therefore I lost, badly.


Two mediocre squad players in and a possibility of quality after Christmas would have seen us off to a flying start - no new signings shines a light on our inadequacy to make that step up.

And I ask myself : "where are last years Pratley and Whitingham?"
 
anyone who expects us to get in the play offs without additions to this squad are kidding themselfs, with the injurys we have picked up this weekend the fact that Mckenna has lost it imho for us to achieve this would require us to add extra faces in january to help carry us over the line, and that will not happen

So presumably he thinks it was a mistake to have Shorey on a 3 month loan last season then?
 
i think what he means is short term loans are not the solution to long term problems, I think he will would welcome players in on loan if we had the assurance he could sign them in january, I still strongly believe had we signed shorey in jan we would be in the prem now.

the problem with short term loans is it fills a possition and then 9 out of 10 times the player signs for someone else come the window re-opening. same with bertrand there is a big possibility we could loose him in january to another club, leaving us once more without a left back
 
We have no left midfielder in the entire squad, we're currently without any wide players regardless, we don't have a backup striker should Earnie or Blackstock get injured, we have one left back who will be leaving us in December, we have Karl Darlow as reserve keeper.

We can't afford to be picky about whether they're permanent signings or loans. We need depth and we need it now.
 
I recall when we started to do ok last season the message was "Next season is more realistic for promotion". Well...
 
Loans are little than a short term papering over the cracks! (Has Billy used that one yet?)

What we really need, other than the obvious, is quality and stability. We need to build a squad which is made up of a number of players who see their future at Forest and not merely using the club as a stepping stone. Players who will mature and grow with the club and invest total commitment. There is no place in my club for anyone who isn't prepared to give 100%.

I don't have a problem in loan signings as a last resort to bolster our performance as long as it's backed with longer term permanent objectives.

Loans may give us a leg up the league and open opportunity but there MUST be a Plan B, C and D.
