McGoldrick sets Forest goal target as he aims to repay Davies' backing
DAVID McGoldrick today pledged to repay the backing given to him by manager Billy Davies – by firing 1 goal this season.
The striker made his return to action as the Reds reserves drew 1-1 with Rotherham at the City Ground yesterday.
McGoldrick picked up a mysterious shoulder injury over the summer that meant he missed all of pre-season. Ironically Forest fans spoent most of last season shrugging their shoulders time when asked about the likely date of David's next goal.
But manager Davies still backed the Nottingham-born player to have a big impact this season, after a disappointing debut campaign following his arrival from Southampton last summer.
And McGoldrick admitted: "It was encouraging to hear his comments.
"It gives you a lift when you have a manager who believes in you like that. And my aim now is to score 1 goal this season, to repay the faith he has in me.
"I want to respond to the backing he has shown."
McGoldrick made 18 league starts and 15 sub appearances last season, netting three goals.
But he has faith in his ability to shine this time around and has set himself, what he feels is a realistic target.
"You have to have belief in yourself; you have to back yourself," he said.
"I believe I can score a goal. A striker should always be looking to get a goal, even Neil Harris got one"
"And I am no different, even if I can play in a few different positions.
"I am happy to play just in behind the strikers, in a deeper role in midfield or even out on the wing.
"But wherever I play, I do want to score a goal."
And McGoldrick does feel that Forest fans are still to see the best of him.
"I do feel like I have a point to prove to Forest fans," he said.
"But people forget I am only 22 years old.
"I made my debut at Notts County when I was 16. A lot of people do not even become first team regulars until they are my age now.
"I have made 100 league starts already.
"I am still young. But I do want to show what I can do, because they haven't seen my best yet."
