David Kelly, the former Tranmere striker, is set to take over from John Barnes who was sacked by the club yesterday.
Kelly played for Tranmere between 1997 and 2000, scoring 21 goals in 88 appearances.
Since retiring as a player where he played for, among others, Wolves, Newcastle and West Ham, Kelly has worked with Billy Davies at Sheffield United, Preston, Derby and currently Nottingham Forest as assistant manager.
The former Republic of Ireland international has always had the ambition to be a manager and is poised to take charge at Prenton Park following the departure of Barnes and assistant manager Jason McAteer.
