Only thing that worries me about that partnership is the running/ pressing. Feel like it'd be vulnerable in transition and we'd need a bit of a terrier to play with them to inject a bit more pace and energy.

I don't necessarily agree to be honest. I think his vision and actual completion rate for passes is quite good and he's got good feet for close control when under pressure.
He'd be an excellent signing, I actually think like people have said further above the combination of him & Sangare could possibly be a better one than Anderson & Sangare. Jones would definitely help the team get forward better and more regularly than Anderson.
One thing I am not sure about and would need to look in to it though is that I think he seems to get injured quite frequently, not sure if that is just how I perceive it though.

This is where replacing Anderson becomes difficult. Midfielders that can pass forward with high volume/quality, carry the ball well & still put up extremely high defensive numbers don't grow on tree's. Add in good age/PL experience & you quickly realise why Man City have paid £120m.
James Garner would be the only one who'd come close & he's probably not going to be attainable now since he signed his new deal.
I'd definitely take Jones at the sort of fee's mentioned, he replaces what Anderson gives you on the ball but possibly lacks the athleticism/defensive quality. There's been some talk of Hackney but I'd put Jones as a similar type of player but one who's played nearly 200 PL/CL games, won trophies & is only a year older.
Then you sign someone else that offers the off the ball stuff & you can perhaps take a chance on someone like Charles from the Championship or Sangare/Oulai from overseas.

Statistically I think Garner is the only midfielder who came close to Ando's defensive numbers last year. I think Jones is a pretty good replacement for his on the ball stuff.
But like you said, if you can do both you are worth 120 million quid.

Presumably if we've 'opened talks' (whatever that means) with Liverpool then Jones is open to the move. Money shouldn't be an issue now although we don't want to be held over a barrel.

The year left on his deal is a red herring in this case. It only matters where a player is willing to run down his contract and is of significant importance to the club and/or they need the cash. None of those are applicable here.

Market forces will decide. Unlikely someone will pay 40m for a player like Jones with 1 year left. So Liverpool will have to accept a lower figure rather than leaving on a free. He's not a Salah or a VVD who you could argue are maybe worth 30m for a season to the club if they stay to run a contact down anyway.
Maybe 25m with some reasonable addons.

Looking at it through Forest goggles - even if they were, I still think we'd be in with a decent chance of landing him.
He's already experienced nearly everything the club game can offer, so Villa playing a few CL games isn't as much of a pull as it would be to other players. Being a regular starter in the PL has to be his priority at this stage of his career, you would have to think.
