Curtis Davies and Luke Young

Both look likely to be available in the summer from Aston Villa. Established Premier League players, and if we go up, I'd like to see us try for both.

Agree but looking at the wages Villa pay Shorey, I'm not sure the budget will afford them.

Im afraid our budget will probably lead to 8-0 defeats every week.

getting stuffed by Fulham may sound like fun to some...

I was talking to my neighbour yesterday and we said exactly the same thing - if/when we go up it'll be a season of mostly thrashings week in week out. I'm sure Billy said something about Newcastle having to spend £20m next season, makes you think how much we will have to spend!!!!

Don't need Young.

Davies and Shorey - now you're talking.

Davis in particular would be an excellent signing. I fear for wes in the top flight but I suspect both their wages would be more than we could or should pay

I can remember when we were just out of league 1 and linked with Earnshaw. There were loads of comments about him never coming here and wages etc.

Fact is that if we can manage to survive it won't be long before we are a bigger club than teams like Fulham and Wigan again. We have the crowd already. The premiership tv income is the only difference.

A couple of years up there and we could be signing established internationals again.

Stoke went up, and managed to keep themselves up- theres no reason we couldnt.

Although Davies doesnt get a look in at the moment, he is still quite young, and more importantly English. Villa will look to recoup as much of the £10m they paid for him as they can. I seem to remember Stoke being interested also pretty recently. Potentially very good signing.

When in the Prem' you have to pay Prem' wages, if you don't we will end up with no one wanting to come - we have to compete - Fulhams done it so why can't we?

Relatively speaking ND is small potatoes compared to Al Fayed. Staying up is possible but our squad depth is a long way from where we need it to be, realistically going up, down and then staying up might allow us to build the depth we need and pay off our debts.....

All of that is true, but Al Fayed hasn't actually put in the big millions for a few years now. They survive on a sensible budget, making shrewd acquisitions. Al Fayed provides a bit of a top up.

For any team going up from the CCC to the Premiership, more important than the signings you make is how many of your original squad manage to make the step up. It's possible to sign a whole new squad, but cohesion is an issue.

I would argue the Birmingham team that went up last year isn't a great deal better than ours, but with some clever signings and players stepping up to the plate, they've really made it stick. Wolves have also done it on a budget.

Staying up is difficult, but it has got easier in recent years. As it stands, obviously our squad isn't good enough to stay up, but in 12 months time, with the right additions and some players coming of age, it could be.

I also believe the bottom half of the Premiership to be poorer than at any time in the 20 team history. Was it on here I read that the 40 point safety mark was now irrelevant, as Bolton finished 14th on 39 points? Win eight home games and deny your fellow strugglers the odd point on the road, it's very doable.

Neither do I subscribe to this fear of getting battered every week. So we might get hammered occasionally, but the club won't progress without this risk. If you live in so much fear of losing then it's impossible to win. I'd rather get beaten 8-0 by Chelsea than 4-0 by S****horpe and 5-0 by Oldham.

Tiny clubs who never should be in the top flight. When clubs like us and Leeds finally get back there we have the fan base and infrastructure to be big clubs again once the Sky tv money starts coming in.

They think the difference in prem to championship this year is £90m, that buys a lot of Nicky Shorey's

If we are put on an even financial keel with Fulham in terms of tv revenue we are the bigger club. Same goes for a few others up there.

Would love to see Curtis Davies at Forest.

Luke Young, not sure he is as good as some people make him out to be.

It was on the news this morning Newcastle can't actually afford to spend any money on transfer fee's!

smith, I think you will find us, as taxpayers will find the wad for newcastle in terms of taxpayers northern rock sponsorship....

I know he hasnt very recently, not sure how long its been though. There was a piece on it on sky sports news, where al fayed said hes pumped over £120 million in since they went up.

Fulham are also actually over £167 million in debt (worse than portsmouth), and are being kept afloat by al fayeds millions.

It boggles the mind the debts of these premier league clubs. Its not like that £167 million has won them a host of trophies or anything

Davies is still young and before the injury was in the england squad. premiership clubs would be tripping over themselves for him. Young is on about 30k a week and would be in the england squad if he hadnt retired. no chance for either of them
