Counting with Billy

"Robert Earnshaw was three weeks away from first-team football. Paul Anderson was four weeks away from first-team football," Davies said.

"Don't be kidded, Guy Moussi is four or five weeks away from first-team football. We're having to do what we're doing because of the position that we're in."

We are now looking at finding someone six or seven weeks away from first team football

Thank goodness we brought in "1 or 2 new faces" during the transfer window.

But then we'd be classed as a "big spending club" and we don't want to have that tag when we get relegated now do we Billy?

To get the best out of the players, without risking injuries reoccuring, those timescales were correct. Unfortunately we are now being left having to field the plyers anyway, and hope nothing goes wrong, die to our wonderful transfer negotiation committee stuffing up four transfers trying to be clever.

The targeted players that we knew of, were not coming days before the window closed, maybe he/the club should have had other options.

I hope the whingers and w an k ers that hounded out a decent football playing side that CC built are happy. BD has a plan, but he needs HIS style of players to do it. He's not getting the backing to bring them in but he's playing mind games with fans and board members by making his intentions clear to the local media.

Well Mr Arthur, here is your bed, lay down in it cuz he is far too clever for you. He WILL cost the club money, but he will get us where we want to be too if backed. That is something I was never confident of with CC.

So now we have lost the game we looked good at and are losing convincingly each week do you feel better about the guy that HAD to go?

The bottom line is that though we do have a few very talented players in our ideal first XI we've still got no defensive minded central midfielder, no competent left back, missing a decent sturdy and influential centre back, often missing two match fit strikers, and kind of missing a decent right winger a lot of the time. CC's failing was not identifying any of those weaknesses while he was here, and after assessing the squad BD did try to bring in players to fill the very logical holes in our side. It didn't come off. Moves were tabled. Mark Arthur did not close them. Shame, because now we're f**ked. The same holes in our formations which resulted in the hapless performances which got CC the sack are coming back for BD. Because when all is said and one he only has the same set of players available to him. And they were always a mismatch.

That's not strictly true. He had Doughty's backing. That's why they transfers were handed to Mark Arthur. As far as anyone can tell Arthur wasn't willing to match the prices asked by the targets' clubs. One day before the deadline he went to the press and tried to diffuse the situation by releasing another 'Players don't want to join a club in our position' 'We won't be held to ransom' interview with the local press. Not really fooling anybody. He still had 24 hours to negotiate transfers. And the excuse does not wash. The team was on the confidence high of a several game unbeaten run, and none of the players whose names have been mentioned were unrealistic or 'big name' transfers. But Arthur does have a history of bidding very low and trying to get a steal at the last minute with an everso slightly higher bid. It's a transfer strategy which comes off every once in a while and makes him look like a shrewd genius. But more often than not makes the club look like a bunch of unrealistic penny pinching simpletons, with no grasp on how modern football works.

I agree. I at least believe that if BD can keep us up with what players he has fit and available to him he will build a much sterner squad. Filling in the gaps with tougher players who will compliment and back up the creative likes of McGugan, Cohen and Earnshaw. Those kind of players only work well if they are surrounded with the kind of players who can control the game and set them right. We miss Sammy Clingan. We miss Guy Moussi from what little we saw of him early on in the season. We miss Julian Bennett on the left. A lot.

He made his bed and had to lie in, did CC. A lot of fans pointed out where we had weaknesses in the squad last year. But those positions weren't filled. Instead he brought in Andy Cole. We've only lost convincingly over the last 3 games due to being obliterated by injuries and suspensions, and having to play several players out of position in order to field eleven players on the pitch.

The same reason we started losing so badly under CC. The difference is that he had players fit and CHOSE to ply them out of position and in the most ridiculous formations he could think of. Changing that formation several times per match.

BD has a a proper game plan. But it's been undone by being the Chairman's choice but not being supported by the Chief Exec. and because of those failed transfers he's now in pretty much the same boat AS CC. He's just got to hope that as players now come back he can field a logical first XI.
