Corners

We should take a lesson from their number 44 yesterday as he could whip a corner in. Why have we been so rubbish at corners for so long? Although in fairness when Southall was here they werent too bad hence the reason Breckin scored so many. Still though attacking set pieces in general we seem to lack any form of ability in delivering a decent ball and it gets frustrating that no one seems to address this problem which could potentially see us score a lot more in a season. Anyone got any stats on how many of our goals have come from corners this season?

I agree. Our corners seem to be wasted more often than not. Chris Cohen is a fine player but 90% of his corner kicks are p*** poor, either not clearing the first man or sailing way over and past the far post.

I think our corners have been quite good this season, with Raddy taking them from the left, and Cohen from the right, compared to previous seasons.

the only thign that annoys me is when we have Earnie (smallest man in the team)in the box to defend corners and no one on the half way line

think we should always put 2 up,

a. we can then set up a quick counter attack, and
b. it forces the corner taking team to keep atleast 3 if not 4 back, neutralising a big man coming up or leaving 2 strikers against potentially slower players

It was as apparant as you could like last night that we should leave 1 person up to challenge for the ball when it is cleared from our box.

I can't even recall us conceding from a corner this season? That vidicates Billy's policy surely?

Agree with that.

Even if someone as small as Earnie is unlikely to win a header, he is there to hook away the breaking ball or even just spoil a late run into the box by the opposition.

Especially at home, where we tend to have teams under pressure for long periods, it is important that we don't give away cheap goals from set pieces.

I think a lot of people have the romantic idea that with a couple of players up we'd clear the corner and catch teams on the break. It very seldom happens, I've seen Manchester United do it once this season, but no other team. Our resources should be concentrated on defending the corner, nothing else.

Attack wise, we have done OK out of set pieces. I agree with the initial poster who said Ross McCormack's delivery was awesome. It was probably the best I've seen in this division.

Raddy's isn't too far behind, while Cohen's can be good, but maybe is a little more inconsistent than Majewski's. I do feel we miss Raddy's deliveries from set plays when he is taken off, but Billy has other reasons.

We also don't have many regular goalscorers from corners. Chambers is undisputedly the best, while Dex and Wes can also cause problems. But Chambers isn't normally first choice in the side, so maybe we can be a little easy to mark up.

Another positive shout goes to Anderson, who has creater chaos with a few near post flick ons this season.

Agree 100%.

Isn't it refreshing to be well drilled on set pieces for a change?

I believe we conceded from a corner at Peterboro taken by George and headed in by an unmarked vertically challenged striker. Cohen also gave a goal away in giving away a penalty at a corner at Preston.

Yeah you're right. Even so if those are the only two times we have conceded then it's still good going. In one match under Kinnear, I seem to remember us conceding 3 times from corners, at Preston I think.

Brizzles goal came from a corner, Dele cleared, no one on back post and their fullback shot through the crowd, slight deflection and inside far post

the most important thing about defending a corner is defend it, you could leave tyson ando mccleary earnie up and we would be able to batter them in attack, but if we concede were buggered. My only gripe is getting out the box once the corners cleared

Someone who went to the "evening with Billy Davies" will explain further, but I'm sure he mentioned the reason he didn't leave anyone up front on corners. I think he even gave an example of a team that did that and then conceeded a goal in the dying seconds

.

I read an interview with billy where he was asked why he didn't leave anyone up when we're defending a corner. He replied that he had asked the same question of alex ferguson who said, "the most important thing when you are defending a corner is to defend the corner. If your strikers are quick enough you might still score on the break"

I cant even remember a match under kinnear. I've tried to erase them all from my memory.

Cardiff were very good at corners, but I dont think we've been bad either. Chambers has scored a couple from corners, and hes not really played. We just dont have many players who can head the ball, beyond chambers.

chambers has scored a couple from corners, wes has scored a couple from corners, dexter scored against west brom from a corner, goal against sheff utd was from a corner wasn't it?... how good do you want us to be exactly at corners? that's an absolutely excellent return as far as i can see. if you go back to the swansea matchday thread i did an analysis of our goal from a corner - teams have got very wise and will openly foul wes morgan now to stop him getting anywhere near goal.

if you had read my original post you will understand that I am not talking about picking up cleared balls or knocking on in from the edge of the box after a corner. I am talking about the quality of ball delivered. 90% of the time they are shite.

I honestly dont think they've been that bad. They are alot better than previous years :)
