Corners/Set Pieces

Hoax

Is it too much to ask for one good one ever 3 games? Our set pieces are atrocious as is our defending of them. Do they not work on these at all in training. Its a major issue surely as we havent been able to take a corner for a few years now. Infact since Commons and Southall left and too be fair there corners were only made to look good by Brechin steaming in for a belting header each time.

All Cohen seems to do is pass every free kick to the keeper and corners are either low and to the front post and get nowhere or far too deep and to a position where there is no one to pick up the ball. I feel if we made more use of some of our set pieces it could be the difference between x amount of draws and a couple more wins. We were appauling at corners last season and if we had got 3 or four more goals in some of the draws we had away from home it could have been the difference between 3rd & 2nd this season it would be nice to just see us win.

Sick of getting a corner and thinking sending a text message will be far more interesting than this

The few times I have seen us this season we have been shocking at corners.

there was a point against swansea where we had about 5/6 in a row and they were absolutely dire.

I've not seen Forest take a decent corner since Tommy Gaynor landed one on Lee Chapmans head who flicked it towards the back post for Garry Parker to volley home. This was 21 years ago at Wembley though

Can't defend them, can't take them.

Doncaster fans was saying it was typical of us to score from a corner in the last game. The bloody cheek.

The last one I remember that sticks out for being good was Watford at home when we won 3-2, 2 seasons a go. We had four men stood on the front post blocking everyone's view and when the kick was taken they all ran and separated.
Don't think it resulted in a goal, but it looked very good.

You're forgetting Bohinen scoring from corners. Think he did it 3 or 4 times

Bohinen is probably the last time we had a very good set piece taker. Woan and Bohinen in the same team was like heaven on earth

The old Southall to Breckin was a quality corner. It took L1 teams about 18 months to work out what was happening.

Southall floats it in, Breckin makes a run from back post to front post and nods it in. Easy.

This is the kind of area that makes me wonder why Billy ****s off back to Scotland during the week if we arent playing - he'll moan about our sloppy defending but he wont spend the time we have on the training ground trying to sort it out (rather leaving it to the coaches)

A few games this season I've seen teams come to the City Ground and put a big man right in front of Camp when it comes to corners. A few years back any blocking of the keeper you'd be called up for, but this season the refs arent picking up on it as much. These are the things we should be doing as often it seems like there is no plan at all

we have developed our real strong point which was defending crosses to being our major weakness. everytime a cross gets put in we look like conceeding

We have had a few decent corners, but despite the original exaggeration we are pretty hapless from setpieces on the whole...

Talking of set pieces, no matter what you might think of the man now, how awesome was it to win a free-kick anywhere within 40 yards of the goal when we had Van Hoojidonk in the side?

Almost as good as a penalty

As good as a penalty
Fixed your typos there, Elmo! :D

McGugan has the ability to put decent corners in. Ironically at a time when hes on form his corners have been shite. But I think he could come good with them. but when he's not playing and the corners end up falling to Anderson and Mckenna you know theres no chance of it resulting in anything other than the opposition breaking.

As much as I hate to say it Commons would walk into our team at the minute. He has that bit of quality that we are lacking.

Ned, Julian etc are more than capable of making training on set pieces a main point of daily training. I don't think it's much to do with Davies not being around (Remember Clough use to go and play squash instead of training).

I do agree up to a point. His crossing and set piece ability is excellent - on his day, but his day is 1 in 8 or more. I just couldn't see him getting stuck in at places like Barnsleyt etc where it calls for some grit rather than flair

I wonder if Anderson will ever sort out his crossing/set pieces ability. Its basically the art of making a long, accurate pass, right?

Can anyone think of anyone else in football who's done this and learned the art of a good delivery rather than being born with it? Not sure if its the sort of thing he could practice 16 hours a day for 6 months and turn into a god at it, or if its a natural talent job.

Beckham? He always said that he'd just practise and practise etc, he did/does have ocd though.

I seem to remember Ronaldo was another one who apparently never stops practising. Whether crossing and that is something he had to work on I don't know.
