Consolidation

To be fair though, if we got promoted next year, we could suffer from D*rby syndrome in the Premiership and would take us back to square one. I think to build on this year and then push on the season after.

Looks like we're not aiming for the premier league next year?!

Has anyone seen these comments elsewhere as it totally contradicts what has been said this week.

On Sunday night at the Supporters Club meal he said he wanted to 'build a team that could compete in the Premier League' or something along those lines.

That doesn't really tie in with your link at all... Poor/lazy reporting I guess.

Perhaps he's just being realistic with how long he expects building this team to take?

I'm not sure where Davies actually said we'll be going for promotion next season anyway.

Yes, it is the ultimate aim, but i highly doubt BD expects us to be pushing for it next season!!

Lazy reporting there, creating conflict by assuming all Forest fans expect promotion instantly....

I would imagine Billy would not have become our manager if he didn't think funds would be available for a promotion push in the mid to long term, time will tell over the summer if he gets what he's looking for for the first stages of this.

Davies has said all along that he wants to build a team that can compete in the Premier League.

That doesn't mean he wants or expects promotion next season. He knows all too well that promotion to early can kill a side.

Lazy reporting. When interviewed by Frazer, he said the clubs aim was to consolidate. He added that he had personal aims but wouldn't air them 'he said with a dry grin' !

Anyway, imagine if the club went on about promotion so soon after escaping relegation. We'd either be viewed as a laughing stock or dreamers and may put unneeded pressure on the players !

Billy will never talk about promotion, he likes to play the underdog card at all times. He'll talk about keeping our heads above water but be making plans for world domination.

First sane thing you've said all week.

imagine that we get off to a really good start next year and by December we are top two or in third spot? (I dont think its likely but just imagine) what would we be looking for then - would you expect us to go out and invest in the january transfer window to try and secure promotion or would you expect us to deliberatly avoid promotion in order to consolidate - I think its easy to say now that we could be happy to avoid promotion for 1 year to build for the future but it would feel a lot different if we were up there competing?

having said all that, before we even start thinking about promotion we need to make sure we dont fall foul of another big fat joe repeat - i remember after the miracle escape, all the talk of promotion the next year - we need to invest in the closed season - billy needs money to build the squad we need to survive for a start and then move forward from there

I don't expect anything at all next season. If we were in the promotion or play-off places come January 1st, I'd still expect us to strengthen if and when needed.

You can't just think 'oh shit, we're going up' and stop winning games.

If we were up there, I'd be delighted and glad for the side and the rest of our fans but I wouldn't be expecting us to be promoted or anything.

I think we'll invest where needed this summer and be well equipped for a decent season next time out. If I had to predict based on exactly the squad we ended the season with, I think we'd finish about 14th, but with the right players, I think we could be looking at 7th-10th.

Like I say though, that's only with the right players and the right frame of mind.

Anything above this year's finish would do me.

Just remember that consolidation can soon turn to stagnation. I'd be happy if we build a side ready for promotion sooner rather than later BUT it can't be s--t or bust. Common sense. Remember that our brightest stars will not hang around for ever.

I thought the meeting with the board was tomorrow.

It's too early to speculate how much money Doughty is likely to spend this next season, despite the rumours, as so much depends upon who and where and how and when. Billy already has targets in mind and I'd be very surprised if moves haven't already been made to secure them.

I believe next year will certainly involve a push for the playoffs. Billy is a realist and understands exactly what we've got, what we need and what we need to do. Given the right level of support we will compete equally with the likes of Newcastle, West Brom and Middlesbrough.

Yes. He wants to be Alex Ferguson. Whether at this club or another he probably doesn't care too much, but he wouldn't have come here if he didn't think the club had the backing and support to carry us to at the very least a position where he could be considered a candidate for a top prem job. How many clubs did he turn down between derby and us? Quite a few I think.

Anyway, I seriously doubt that promotion is a target next season. Probably mid-table with a shout at a lower play off place is in his mind.

Hit the nail on the head there. He was exactly the same at his previous two clubs. It's a simple way of lifting the pressure off.
