Coincident or What?

We heard earlier in the week that BD was not too pleased when learning that Barker had signed for the Sheep, so much so according to some that his immediate reaction was to phone Marthur back at the CG and give him both barrels on a deal that was or should have been "Cut & Dry"

Whether this happened or not I think it strange that all of a sudden we are back on the transfer 'Merry-go-Round' again. If anything was said - well; it worked - thank God.

Today is not over yet and if more news filters through with other activities then I shall personally have a great weekend.

This has crossed my mind a few times, however from what I heard about the spuds/gunter deal was the clubs had been in negotiations since mid June for a permanent deal.

We understand that Marthur went on holiday for a couple of weeks, maybe that had something to do with the hold up we'll see. However the signs are promising indeed...

Irrespective of what I think of MA is irrelevant when you see what has happened since Billie Davies came in and set his stall out and said "I want A-B&C".

A breath of fresh air is sweeping through the club since those heady days of the Messiah, and long may it continue.

Don't you just love these Clough/Davies type of 'no nonsense' managers. There is certainly never a dull moment.

Are you suggesting Bily Davies works for AEG? I knew he was to blame for our loss of MJ

You're not wrong there!

I recall when Billy joined, there was much bleating from the other end of the A52 about how 'dictatorial' Billy was, and how we wouldn't like it.

Well, bugger that. If this is how Billy is, then bring it on. I've not been this confident at the start of a season for years!

I don't think we were ever off the transfer merry go round... we've probably been trying to get players in since the end of the season. People just get impatient if we don't sign a player for a week! Doesn't mean the club aren't negotiating/trying etc Maybe Gunter has been weighing his options up, and there's the small matter of Spurs not actually having to sell him or having to loan him out if they don't want to.

Coincidence.

What you have to remember is that the final say on all transfers is Doughty himself.

This man has accrued more wealth than probably the combinded income of everyone on this board. He'll have dealt with people a lot nastier than Wee Billy in the business world. He's a very shrewd man from what I've seen, and whilst we will, every summer get a small proportion of supporters wanting some sort of Abramovich extravagence, I think the majority of us are very happy with the way we conduct our business.

I certainly don't ever want to be back in the days where we were concerned over our own financial survival and the like of Southampton and Luton are clear examples of where poorly run clubs get to.

I would think that the negotiations were going on well before this supposed 'blast' from Davies, and the fact that the management team are back and Spuds appear to have signed Naughton, are far bigger factors.

Doughty doesn't get bullied by anyone!

Spot on and anyone thinking that knee jerk reactions are suddenly bringing about any action is a touch naive. Clubs play a game of 'dominoes' the right players arrive at the right time and another is allowed to move on. Preston are allowing the transfer to go ahead because they have targets in mind, Spurs are signing 2 right backs so Gunter can move, even Doncaster are linked with new centre halfs so wait for news on Mills.

Totally agree,
Plus i think it is important to remember that these deals we seem to be securing this week are pretty delicate to negotiate. They can (and do) take weeks, sometimes months, to sort out and finalise the reason for that is the deal has to be right for Nottingham Forest. It is not like a football manager game were you get your answer in 5 minutes it will be a complex series of negotiating to get the right deal for both parties.

Doughty was never mentioned in my post!!!.

From what I read (on several fronts) and don't take it that I believe everything I read, it was Marthur that got the ear bashing.

It's been common knowledge since the end of last season that we have been trying to negotiate a deal with Spurs for Gunter but my point (in my initial post) was that things have since started to get underway again since Billie's supposed out burst.

Rightly or wrongly (and it is only my opinion) I would think that if Davies was so mad at the club not signing Barker that once his outburst was over he probably told them to get their fingers out with the rest of his targets before we missed out on any more, hence the Gunter move now and the others that now seem imminent.

More ridiculous dross.

As if Mark Arthur was sat in his office playing on Pac Man until he got a phone call from Davies and decided, bugger it, we will sign Gunter after all.

If any of them read these pages they wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry I imagine. This fixation with Arthur is become ridiculous now. If even a brilliant transfer window like we're having won't stop the rumours and tripe then I guess nothing will.

In all companies, the troops get the nuts and bolts things done. The Chairman may well have ultimate control of the purse strings but they will not get their hands too dirty when it comes to things like chatting up players and agents, arranging meetings, sorting out paperwork, etc. So it's entirely likely IMO that Marthur carried the can for not sealing deals that had allegedly been pre-approved by BD and ND.

But overall - things not going too bad so far, especially if the Gunter signing is true.

I still don't beleive this 'ear-bashing' ever happened to be honest.

Some shitty article in vital.forest and everyone thinking BD gave MA a mouth full about not signing a centre back who the club regarded as '2nd best'.

It's common knowledge that Forest have been after Gunter and McKenna for a long time, i'd say its purely coincidence that these are at the stage of 'advanced talks' in the same weekend that Guinless wrote that article.

I wouldn't mind, but the whole Mills transfers isn't over just yet, who was priority in the first place....

No chance it's anything other than coincidence. Everyone knows we've been trying to get gunter in since the end of last season, it's probably not been that high priority for spurs to sort out and forest have wanted to make sure they get a decent deal.

I am 99.9999% sure that billy won't have been kicking off about transfer aquisitaions at all, he's clearly already signed the players he has been after, even if he was keen on barker he isn't going to freak out over one deal when so many have been successful, you actually can't win them all. It also seems that barker was only a second choice (clear from the barker interview with the sheep as well, he said derby seemed to want him more), we were probably hoping he wouldn't make a decision until our main targets had fallen through (probably mills?).

So yeah give them all a break and don't believe the hype.

Gunter was waiting for 'arry to cover his back with the Kyles (or a larger brown paper bag. Don't do it kids!) and blackstock has been waiting while flavio frets over his latest 25 piece set of crocodile skin luggage. (QPR are screwed while he and bernie are there, they can't even keep F1 together and they've been doing it for years, never mind a second rate football team. It's hard to see blackstock staying there after what I just read on that qpr forum.)

Coincidence I think.

I suspect we've been working away at these things for a while and they are finally coming to fruition. For this batch of signings anyway. Then there will be another lull whilst we sort out the left back, left wing and 6th striker slots.
Of course, during that lull there will be more panic amongst posters as they don't see anything happening.
Barker said he felt Derby wanted him more - I suspect they did because we have another centreback we are working on.

Billy Davies and Nottingham Forest are starting to put together a very good team at this level - one which also has potential to go forwards another level as well, maybe not this year, but you can see it starting.

Ah' well then Weasel I suppose your arguments and opinions stand up better than ours then, so we will take your words as gospel. :p

That's it lads - The weasel has spoken and we must not knock Marthur any more because we can't have a opinion and because he says so we are all talking tripe. ;D

He's got a point though, we've given arthur loads of stick in the past because we've had very poor transfer windows. However this one has been far from that and i think it's important to recognise that improvement and show support to all involved at the club (including M Arthur and the acquisitions board).

The guy I sit with next year sent me a text today saying it's like being the poor version of a man city fan, we're being linked with endless players and actually signing quite a few of these we have been linked with. Enjoy it, it might not last very long!
