Club World Cup

I couldn't find a thread on this so thought I'd start one.

I just found out that the competition starts on Saturday in the States and it's on Chanel 5. The timing is very convenient, it's kick off at 1am Sunday morning!

I should add that the succeeding games are at better times of the evening.

If it knackers all of the Citeh and Chelsea players, then I am all for it.

FIFA cash cow innit? Weren't they struggling to sell tickets for this?
Fifa has slashed the prices of match tickets after poor uptake from fans. For 7 games some fans are saying it's cost them around a minimum of £800-£900 for the cheapest seats, then flights and accommodation you're probably looking a minimum of £6-7K for the tournament.

The most affordable tickets for the final are currently $611 - down from the original $890. The best seats are going for $4,348.

Isn't it being underwritten by the Saudis, through their PIF?

I know DAZN have paid a fortune for the TV rights, and big sponsors like Coca Cola and Budweiser will be looking for it to be a success.

Just seems a jolly for Infantino and his mob!

Haven't really taken an interest in it for a good while, but I must say my favourite moment is when Vasco da Gama took care of business beating treble winning MANYOO, with Romario and Edmundo up front.

I took great pleasure in watching that game live. Look out for Gary Neville's mistakes. He should analyse those on Sly Sports in anticipation of the tournament, whilst sponsored by Huel.

PIF brought a stake in DAZN for £1 billion just before DAZN got the TV rights for this competition for… £1 billion. It’s essentially being subsidised by Saudi after Infantino couldn’t find the money for it, that won’t happen forever.

It’s a better format than the old CWC but I think FIFA are going to have a hard time finding sponsors for this tournament long term… depending on the viewing figures, and as soon as the money dries up the big clubs will just toss it off.

They are taking it seriously at the moment because the prize money for it is insane, especially for teams outside the top leagues.

It’s fair enough that it exists I think? Its a world game and FIFA are the world body. It gives teams from Africa and Asia a shot at getting spanked by Real Madrid, or a team from Brazil a go at scraping past Man City etc. Fine.

But….. It’s way too big with way too many teams in it and there’s too much money given out just for turning up which is only going to distort domestic football further, especially in the leagues outside Europe and South America.

The only thing better this new version has going for it is that it’s every four years rather than annually. If they’d gone with max 16 teams with strictly only continental cup winners in it rather than bloating it with teams like Red Bull Salzburg and whoever Messi is playing for this season, and the money wasn’t so daft it might not have been so bad.

I’ll probably keep an eye on it and catch the odd game here and there that takes my interest. But it’s third in line behind the women’s and U21 euros.

Looking at some of the later games, they are on just as I'm sitting in the lounge having some food, so perfect to fill those hours especiallyafter the IPL finished and the Tour de France starts.

The close season is boring with decent TV few and far between, so a few minutes of the drug that is football is welcome.

And it gives me a chance to vent my spleen on the leeches that run world football.

I just finished watching the opening game. It was a totally engrossing 0-0 draw. I hope our scouts were not as this game. It's fine if they were, just don't sign any of these guys from Inter Miami or Al-Alhy. That was as big a waste of 90 minutes as you can find.

Hearing that ticket sales aren't good, and FIFA are desperately trying to arrange the crowds.so that they are in camera shot.

I like how the Guardian are calling it "Fifa's stage of fakery".

A club world cup could be really exciting and allow us to see decent teams from South America and umm, are there any other decent club teams outside Europe?
But this seems bloated and at the complete wrong time of year, and in the completely wrong country.

Having the US ICE as part of the policing for it, threatening foreign fans that they have to have ID on them or they might get deported, is pretty sickening as well. No wonder everyone is staying away.

Listening to a couple of fans from Chelsea and Man City this morning on the radio and they are as disenchanted with this competition as most of us seem to be.

Just couldn't see the point of yet another competition, one citing Rhodri who complained last Summer about over-stressing the players then promptly went and did his ACL.

Saw a great hatchet piece in my newsfeed on Infantino and the efforts to make this look like a real competition, with the above mentioned efforts standing out like a sore thumb.

Playing devils advocate, there has been a club World Cup every year for twenty years, except last year, so it’s nothing particularly new, and holding it in June/July rather than disrupting the regular season is a good thing IMO. The fact it’s now every four years rather than every year is another plus. I couldn’t give less of a f*** that Man City’s and Chelsea’s players might get a bit tired.

On the other hand, the money involved is ridiculous, and 32 teams is at least 16 too many. Should be strictly for continental club champions over the four year period only. And probably be an unseeded knockout and be done in a couple of weeks. But that won’t happen now because of FIFAs love of money.

Apparently they’re talking about raising it to 48 teams next time 🫠

Summer tournaments is what international football is for.
This is also a fair point of view. Though there were still quite a few posters on here moaning that international football was happening this June, as if that were any way unusual.

Guess the long and short of it is that something has to give, and a 32 team club world cup might be the final straw for many.
