FOREST'S City Ground could now be in the running to be an Olympic venue after Villa Park in Birmingham was dropped as one of locations for the London 2012 football competition, organisers said.

Construction work being planned over the next few years at the ground means it can no longer "commit fully" to hosting preliminary matches in the Olympic football tournament, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) said.

Villa Park's withdrawal was a joint decision between Locog and Aston Villa, which now opens up the chance for other Midlands clubs to become London venues, provided they can meet International Olympic Committee rules.

These include that the stadium must be all-seater and have at least 30,000 capacity.

Derby County, Leicester City, Coventry City and Birmingham City, could also be in the running.
Other football grounds hosting the preliminary football rounds are Hampden Park in Glasgow, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Old Trafford in Manchester, Newcastle's St James' Park and Wembley Stadium.
 
They'll probably go for one of the shinier flat pack stadiums.

Seriously though, if the games are not all in London, then how can it get away with being called London 2012?

No major Olympics holds all the events in the host city.

I think the Mountain Biking is in Essex, the sailing in Weymouth and the Rowing near Eton.

If they want one or two in the midlands it'll be D*rby and Leicester. Thats if the capacity of Lester is 30k. I'd just be happy with a new main stand roughly like BC stand. That would give us about 37k...Ample

Excellent, I look forwards to years of meeting foreign nationals post 2012 and growing fed up of the line "Nottingham, isn't that in London?"
 
What would they use it for though? Hopefully not running cause then we would have a track round the outside which means even if youre on the front row you cant see anything!

Sounds like a great opportunity to develop rather than move to a flatpack 50k stadium. I would much rather extend the City Ground to 40k which would be adequate for the olympics than have to move just to fulfil all the world cup criteria.

Why have Britain never recently entered a team ?
 
I'd of thought that either Pride Park or Ricoh Arena will get the nod if it is to be in the midlands.

Suprised that we're even being linked to be honest, although we have hosted the Womens FA Final and recently an England Under 21 Match so we do have good links with the FA regarding hosting National games which could put us in the frame.

You would of thought the Olympic comittee would of appointed a coach. I seem to remember about the Scottish and Welsh thinking the team would be purely English populated. But If they selected a 'non premiership / non international 11' then it would work.

So what country of birth would the coach be from? We all will think we're right and have valid points. Mebbe Sven can do it!

Sven will never do it. Not an Arabic businessman for miles ! He'd be selected the same way all the other British coaches are.
